Someone must know where Ed is

(Filed: 09/05/2005)

Seven months ago, Eddie Gibson walked out of university and left for Cambodia. His family have not seen him since. Jonny Beardsall talks to his parents, Mike and Jo, about his sudden disappearance and their desperate attempts to find out what has happened

It was seven in the evening, one Monday last November. Jo and Mike Gibson were waiting at Heathrow to meet their 19-year-old son, Eddie, who was due to arrive on a flight from Bangkok, and take him back home to Hove. They waited, watching the passengers emerge into the terminal, but as the last few stragglers came out, they realised Eddie wasn't on the flight.

Eddie Gibson

Last seen: Eddie Gibson in Cambodia last year

"My heart sank," says Jo. "I really thought he was going to be there." But he wasn't. He has not come home and there has been no trace of him since.

The Gibsons' story will resonate with every parent of a gap-year student. You may be lulled into a sense of security because you can keep in touch by e-mail, but you never really know where your son or daughter is, or how they are faring on the other side of the world. "Brighton is a youngsters' town, and there's a part of Ed that would have thought he could walk on water," says his father. "He's bright, well-liked, well-travelled and street-wise, so the other side of the world was attractive. This is the danger for kids: they think Cambodia is just like Sussex, but it's not."

Eddie was three weeks into a joint honours degree in international management and Asian-Pacific studies at Leeds University when on October 4 last year, he simply upped and left. The same day he withdrew £3,000 from his bank account and flew to Bangkok, before proceeding overland to Cambodia. He had told no friends, family or tutors that he was going.

On October 24, he sent his mother a long e-mail from Phnom Penh. "He explained that he was terribly sorry, how he realised after only a week that university wasn't for him and he didn't know how to tell us," recalls Jo. "He was very upset. It was, he felt, something he had to sort out for himself. He also said he was coming home in 10 days and gave me the flight number.

"He sounded fine - he just needed to clear his head and sort himself out. He said I was the best mum in the world and that I wasn't to worry."

His father - his parents divorced amicably a decade ago - also received two similar assurances. That was the last anyone heard of him.

Mike and Jo Gibson

Mike and Jo Gibson: assurances

Eddie's family can find no signs that anything was wrong: no girlfriend troubles, financial worries or drugs issues, no fall-outs with them or with his university. He was, in fact, fresh from his gap year. He had spent nine months travelling with friends in Australia and the Far East and then had worked for his father in his commercial finance business in Brighton before beginning his studies. "There was nothing we could pinpoint - we'd have felt better had there been," says Mike.

Off the Rails in Phnom Penh by Amit Gilboa - essential reading for back-packers and gap-year travellers to Cambodia - is still on their son's bookshelf. "Eddie was fascinated by Phnom Penh and Cambodia," he continues. "It's one of those places where you can disappear and do your own thing. It held an allure for him, as it does for many other young westerners. The fact that anything goes attracts kids, and that's what attracted Ed."

In the six months since Eddie vanished, his parents have turned over every possibility: they have talked to his friends, his university, British police and the Foreign Office, and have flown four times to the Far East to look for him, spending £12,000 to do so.

"The British Embassy staff have been so very helpful," says Mike. "On my last trip, Gary Benham, the British Vice-Consul, gave me two members of his staff on an almost full-time basis." So far, the Cambodian police's lacklustre efforts to find Eddie have proved fruitless and because money talks in Cambodia, the couple have also engaged private investigators. They now know that Eddie entered Cambodia at Poipet on October 9, but there is no record of him having legitimately crossed any other borders.

It has been established that he stayed in Phnom Penh in hotels and guesthouses. They have met Ami, the local girl and her family with whom he had been staying. While there, the girl's father died and Eddie attended the funeral on October 14. "He had a close relationship with this girl," says Mike. "He gave the family some money as they were very poor. We have a video of him at the funeral, looking fit and well."

Eddie Gibson is a good-looking young man. Six foot tall with blue eyes and short hair streaked blond by the sun, he smiles from the photograph taken with a coconut seller at the temple of Angkor Wat last year. He looks the sort that would be fun to travel with. "He is, he's a loveable, sensitive boy and he so loves travelling and learning about other cultures," says his mother. "I just hope and pray that someone returning from their gap year may have seen him, and that someone may read this and get in touch to put our minds at rest."

Jo went to Cambodia in February. She spent a week in Phnom Penh, then flew to Sien Reep - close to Angkor Wat - which Eddie had visited on his gap year. She spoke to police and put up posters about his disappearance, offering a reward for his safe return. She went to beaches, bars and backpackers' hang-outs, in the hope that someone knew something. One local man told her, bluntly, that if her son had money on him, there are those who don't think twice about murdering people in Cambodia. He said they'd "just bury the body". She was overcome.

"When he said that, I sank to the ground and was almost physically sick," she says. "It's the worst thing a mother can go through, although when I came round, I realised that this man couldn't know. It was just talk."

To help search for Eddie, now 20, his parents have set up a website, and e-mails arrive from all over the world. "We get new leads every day and follow them up," Jo says. "Sometimes your heart's pounding because you read that someone thinks they were with him on a 10-hour bus journey to Hanoi. You ask them what he was saying and, as their description unfolds, you realise it's not him. Others have e-mailed photographs but as the images download, they're not of Eddie."

Other parents have called and e-mailed with support, including the father of the murdered student Lucie Blackman, whose remains were found in a cave in Japan. "Unlike our friends, who can't appreciate what it's like, Tim Blackman can," says Mike.

"We must hope for the best and fear for the worst. The worst is that he was robbed and something bad has happened to him, and the best is he isn't ready to come home. You have to remain positive because once you sink into the negative stuff, it's very difficult."

His wife is silent for a bit, then says: "When I cross a street in town, I sometimes catch a glimpse of someone from behind. For a flickering moment, I think it's Eddie. But of course, it never is. What else can we do, but keep on hoping? Someone somewhere must know something."

I'm sure the kid's fine, met some tart, fallen in love, teaching English, you know the routine? He'll pop up!!

For the sake of his mum and dad I hope you are right, but I remember seeing his poster plastered all over Phnom Penh two months ago now, and would probably share your optomism if he had last been seen here and not there.

I do agree that more needs to be done to find out what happened and where he is, not knowing his fate (if that's the case) is the worst mental suffering any human being or family can go through.

Whatever the outcome, this needs closure.

Moog - I think it is Dark Night, not Knight :o

This topic was posted earlier today and was shut down as missing persons posts are against TV rules. (apparantly).

Got to feel a bit of sympathy for this family though.

Yeah I know..... I originally posted this from the Daily Telegraph last month - it is genuine, not some missing person who owes the OP of the other topic money.

On the website is a moving downloadable video from his Mum and Dad.

Perhaps TV could make an exception, before we all go back to discussing 'Gay for a Day' or summink.

I agree i dont think this should be closed down. The parents of this poor lad cant close on it till it gets solved one way or another and maybe just maybe there is someone reading these posts who recognises him and can help.

I hope he turns up safe and well my sympathy goes out to his family and friends

I think its worth noting that I have known many people leave Cambodia by unorthodox routes especially into Laos.

That the Cambodian authorities have no 'official' record of him leaving the country, to me, is neither here nor there and should not be considered 'gospel' fact that he is still in Cambodia. I wonder if they have checked Thai, Lao, or Vietnamese Immigration to see if he entered any of these countries?

It sounds like he had done one runner and could well have decided to carry on running.

I hope the lad turns up safe and well somewhere.

I would like to see help given to this Family by making an exception in this case.

As he originaly flew into Bangkok his name will already be in the Immgration Computer

So it should be simple to Check his record there to see if he

was recorded as re-entering Thailand prior to his intended

flight home ...

Would it be simple to approach Immigration for such info

- or would it require for example a request from the British Embassy?

to me it just sounds like someone else who got submerged by the whole asian happyness myth or got fed up with the pressure from home on the whole uni / degree /parent thing.

why else would someone drop out and suddenly appear in a family ( of a girl he loved very much ) funeral video that is half way round the world?

the guy is living happily and well with a girl in cambo somewhere. probably not Ami :o

Hmm, not all borders have computers even on the Thai side. When you cross to Burma at Mai Sot, there is no computer system on either side. He could have entered and exited Thailand a second time without having gone onto any computer system. The only record would be in his passport or from those entry/exit cards you have to fill out.?

Dear all,

My name is Matt and I am the brother of Eddie Gibson the boy the question, I would just like to thank you all for your responses, especially those who asked for the story not to be taking of the network. Just to inform many who asked about immigration that all the borders that have been referred to have been checked out and know “official” record has come up. There is also a private investigation taking place in Cambodia at the moment to get to the heart of the problem discovering what has happened or identifying his whereabouts.

If anybody would like to know anymore about the story then visit the website www.eddiegibson.net there is a short video telling you the story so far. Also if anybody has any ideas or information then please email me on [email protected].

Kind regards

Matt

Not a lot I can say Matt, only I sincerely hope that any cynical posts on this thread have not weakened your hope... People will always assume what they think has happened but none of them know.

I just hope that whatever the outcome, you and your family can at least find peace, and I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say you have our support.

Regards

Cameron

First, I hope you are successful in locating your brother and that he is alive and well. Do you have thoughts regarding the above notated article?

Particularly about Ami's situation and Eddie's frequent trips to Poipet?

I hope this is taken as constructive.

There is a reasnoable website for his search. It is also clear they can trace alot of his movements as the media outlet claims they have a copy of his passport.

I suggest they change the website, and add some pictures of him and where he is known to have been.

Therefore the website would say e.g. October xx, 2004, wat at this location here is his picture, and here are some location shots. Maybe something also to jog people's memory of what was happening at that time.

Ask yourself this, how many times have you seen a falang at a border point, and just forgotten them straight away. A picture of the place, and the person will help alot. That is why they set up "Dummies" of abducted people at their last known location.

The problem is, when you move around those areas there are so many faces, without a location and some way of getting the timeframe involved, its very difficult for people to remember.

Hopefully, that might get someone to also remember if they saw him in other people's company. Then you have something to move forward with.

I find it strange, but not improbable he went to Poipet so much. Based on the reported behaviour, it sounds like he was suffering from some sort of anxiety or depression. Compulsive behaviour though undesireable, is quite possible. Though his motives for going there may have been ok, what else happened is another question.

The suggestion of the Tinned Food, sounds like he was planning to go off into the jungle for a while. This showing a plan to do something, being a key to his last movements.

Has his girlfriend provided an inventory of his personal items and clothes. This is important to try to track him. A shirt, toothbrush etc is all evidence. The more of this the better the chances of getting closer to him.

Do the local "bandits" still like to ransom people. This may be a chance, and they just don't know how to request the ransom. I know ransoming was very popular about 10 years ago.

He may also be in someone's captivity, and they are seeking greater return.

Anyway, I hope he just turns up with a big hangover and a new girlfriend.

After reading that news article Im little confused. One thing for sure though, I would be putting Ami in a 2 by 2 cell with a very bright light.

Why the facination with Poi Pet? streetwise at 20? yeah right, maybe down at his local pub. If he was that streetwise he would not be walking around with cash in his pocket that equals two years salary for a Thai or Cambodian.

The guy I knew was involved with a drug syndicate and was killed due to "turf problems". I hope this young lad was not stupid enough to do the same thing.

Matt Clark - I hope you get some form of closure soon mate. You can also hire ex military "chiefs" for a small amount of money - you might have to go that route.

I would be upping the investigation now while its all relatively fresh in peoples minds. If you are prepared to pay, you will get the help needed. Money in this part of the world goes a long way with obtaining info.

once again, good luck.

ST

Gibson made the unusual decision to revisit the town (Poipet) several times.

That, is the bit I do not understand.

Most of us just go to this shitty place (Poipet) get our visa and get out ASAP.

Why would a 19 yr old newbie go to Poipet several times????

From the Sunday Times article:

Two witnesses have said that 20-year-old Eddie Gibson left Phnom Penh for the town of Poipet on October 23 last year. He was believed to have had about £1,500 in cash and was travelling on his own. He has not been seen since.

£1,500 = 110,000 baht. I wouldn't walk anywhere in Thailand with that kind of cash on me. I fear the worst.

Hi my name is Matt one of Eddie's brother i just wanted to ask for some assistance. Eddie was booked on a Flight from Bangkok to London on the 24th of October 2004.

So we are investigating whether he entered Thailand after this point!

I was wondering if anybody has links with immigration or could help establish with Immigration whether he had additional entries on his Immigration

records following his Original arrival in Bangkok on early October 2004 and his subsequent departure from Thailand to Cambodia. Not only could this lead to new information but give us an confimation of his movements.
