thaimate
Yesterday we went shoping in Carrfour(we usually go to Tesco) i was surprised how much their prices have risen ,and not just on imported food but Thai products as well, have any of you noticed this? Tesco seem to be far cheaper but on the whole inflation seems to be on the increase across the board in the land of smiles.
basjke
Carrefour has risen the price of almost everything they sell between 4 and 10% early January. It may look like peanuts but if you rise a popular item that was 20 Baht to 21 Baht you have a price rise of 5% and it is the percentage that counts in the end. It also amazes me how they get away with those promotions they do in the food and bakery department. They usually put a sign that the price is lowered for a certain article but they forget to add that they made the portion smaller also. thaimate
I must say that yesterday was our last trip to carrfour in the forseeable future ,i had assumed that maybe it was the tourist season so they were cashing in as it does appear to me that most of their customers seemed to be of the tourist variety, rather than the resident shoppers. Shopping Centers in Pattaya maybe have "Farang Prices". BTW, I hear the rumours, that "Homepro" gonna move out from Carrefour. Anybody knows? Homepro has a parcel of land on the corner of KhaoTalo and Sukhumvit for many years already but there has never been any movement other than redshirt gatherings. That's a bit odd as most shoppers at Tesco even in Pattaya are Thai. If the prices are different, I reckon it has more to do with the cost of doing business locally, different labor and real estate costs for example. Chaimai
I saw that many products selling in Tesco in Laem Chabang are cheaper than in Tesco in South Pattaya. Shopping Centers in Pattaya maybe have "Farang Prices". This was evident in the TOPS store in the new Central development - Tolley garden peas 85 Baht for 500g, they are 89 Baht for 1kg in Makro. I would expect to pay more in tops in central as the rents must be very high and it does cater for tourists and short stayers, but Tops in Sri Racha are cheaper than Pattaya. Jingthing
The food store at Central isn't Tops. Its branded completely differently. Yes I know they are commercially related but the foods they stock are very different than a standard Tops.
CHdiver
Usually you will not see that in the West (at least not where I am coming from). Places with higher rent usually do have a lot more business, so they do not need higher margin to get the rent in. For a Nationwide Business its also not too easy to do that, because it will make Marketing more difficult. Special offers for example from Tesco and Carrefoure are Nationwide. Would make it kind of difficult to ask higher prices. But TiT...

stingray
Fodland have firstclass quality and many imported products, therefore the price is high. You'll get what you pay for!. Specially the butchery section is excellent. In Tesco is horrible. Carrefour have more prodcts bt not tha quality. Another thing. Classic example of different prices is MC DONALD. Pattaya much higher prices than somwhere else. MC Donald should have everywhere the same prices. It's a internatioal company, but i guess they charge "tourist prices" overhere. Phil Conners
I don't think Foodland prices are higher than Carrefour. In addition, Foodland is no-nonse: You go in, buy what you need and out with a bill of perhaps 1,000 baht. In Carrefour you're tempted by all sorts of crap you never though about buying and end up with a trolley full of stuff you don't really need and a bill of 3,000 baht instead. At least that's my experience.
theoldgit
Surely with the Baht being stronger against western currencies imported products should be going down in price, not up.

My sentiments entirly , but the reverse seems to be the case. as for foodland we tend to go there for for quality products rather than price . Rimmer
How much is it worth to not to have to wait in line for 10 or 15 minutes at the checkouts? Foodland is always fast and efficient with no waiting at the checkouts and someone to push the trolley to the car an unload it for you.

Pattaya46
Carrefour has financial problems in Belgium, France and other countries. Financial problems ? Sources ? The only "problem" that Carrefour has in Europe is that it can build new supermarket fast enough to invest its money, because of new European regulations to limit the number of supermarkets and save the smaller shops. Its the same problem for all other big companies, like Casino (Big C).

farangpattaya
I'm done with the Carrefour bakery.......... apart from the fact that bread prices went up approx. 25-30% in 2 months, I found a cockroach in the packing.......... I know, on many occassions people post here on this, but all the time I thought........yeah, yeah...........now I found out myself.......... William Osborne
Can't believe so many people (male) know the actual price per kilo of something Luckily I have a wife to do the shopping.... while I have a couple of cold ones down in the food court.. Although, she does waffle on about the prices ... although i usually tune out "yeah, yeah, thats interesting, dear"
barryofthailand
Carefour is an excellent store, but Foodland is the Ultimate in Thailand. We live in Korat and have Home Fresh in the Mall which is OK, but would love to have a Foodland Barry
