richardjm65 Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 Can anybody recall, (preferably with references), what the best/worst pound sterling to thai baht exchange rate was at the high (or low) point of the financial crisis of 1997. Some say they recall 90 baht to the pound. Would appreciate some facts.
chiang mai Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 I can't remember but this man knows. I think it was 88.7 . http://currate.com/charts.php
wordchild Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 The highest for the baht agst pound was on the 23d Jan 1998, at 90.8. that was the recorded price at the end of day but it may have traded higher even than this during the day. In fact between the 11th and the 23d it traded at or close to 90 a number of times.
wordchild Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 That was a real spike and it came down pretty quickly after that, by the end of march 1998 it was back to 63.
MJP Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 Spiked at 101 for a very short while, perhaps hours. No link, just what I'm told by someone who was here then. jonwilly Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 I had B 85 to the pound sterling from an ATM in Early Jan. I seem to remember in 1982 the pound was in very low 20's, I was paid in DM at the time. john
wordchild Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 The low level for baht/sterling in the last 30 years was 28. That was in october 1984. Again that is a spot price and for changing sterling at that time you would have got less than that.
cmsally Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 I remember in mid 1985 it was around 33Bt It must have continued up from there as in 1988 I think it was around 46-48 BT
gotlost Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 January 23, 1998 Bangkok Bank selling rate for GBP 90.83, USD 55.06. Dont we wish.

I was stood on a 40,000 tonne stockpile of lead dust in the pouring rain at the time of the call to the broker. So not too bovvered now, although could do without it.

fredob43 Posted March 2, 2010 Posted March 2, 2010 Was in phuket at the time, when we arrived it was 64bt within 10 day's it had gone to the mid 90's All the exchange's were closing at 5/6 pm as they were running out of money. I sure at one time not for long, but at one of the exchange's we saw it at 98. It was still in the 90's when I came back up north. And has stayed high untill a couple of year's ago.
