Miss Universe beauties to visit Phuket

PHUKET: -- Miss Universe 2005 contestants will visit tourist attractions and hospitals, and learn about Phuket culture, when they visit the island on May 19 on a tour designed to boost Phuket’s tourism industry.

The 82 young women from around the world will spend a day in the province during the run-up to the competition, which will take place in Bangkok on May 30.

Vice-Governor Winai Buapradit told a press conference today, “Phuket is the only province apart from Bangkok that is to play host to the Miss Universe contestants.

“Thailand and Phuket will gain many benefits from hosting Miss Universe 2005, especially in terms of promoting tourism. The activities will be show on the media worldwide.”

The group is due to arrive at Phuket International Airport at 10 am. Their first stop will be Phuket FantaSea at Kamala, where they are due to be welcomed to the island by Vice-Governor Winai and then have lunch. T hey will then see an “Amazing Kamala” show.

In the afternoon, the contestants will be divided into two groups. One will go to Patong, where the contestants hand over a donation of 12 million baht to the hospital, then experience a demonstration of the new tsunami warning system.

The other group will go to Thalang Rd in Phuket City for demonstrations of Phuket culture, such as batik making, and a chance to buy One Tambon One Product (OTOP) goods.

Vice-Governor Winai added that Phuket will take this opportunity to show countries around the world that the province is ready to welcome tourists back after the tsunami.

Provincial Police Deputy Commander Pol Col Kokiat Wongvorachart said that a total of 394 police officers will be providing protection for the contestants and directing traffic to ensure they travel smoothly around the island.

Miss Universe shoot sparks row

From correspondents in Bangkok

May 18, 2005

A BEVY of beauties vying for the Miss Universe crown sparked a row in Thailand when they paraded in swimsuits in front of revered Buddhist temples.

The stunt, part of events in the three week lead-up to the May 31 pageant, has irked religious and political leaders, with some demanding that the offending scenes be cut out of the final television broadcast.

Photographs splashed across the front pages of Thai and English language newspapers showed the bikini-clad beauty queens on the deck of a cruise ship with Bangkok's imposing Wat Arun Buddhist temple as a backdrop.

The contestants did not enter the religious sites in their swimwear, but scenes of them baring skin was too much for some.

"The visitors are not Buddhists, they don't understand our culture," Udom Charoen, director of Thailand's National Buddhism Office, said.

The Nation reported that Tourism and Sports Minister Somsak Thepsuthin said scenes of the contestants in swimsuits with temples in the background would be edited out of footage to be broadcast worldwide on May 31.

Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said the incident may have been blown out of proportion.

"We sometimes take things too seriously," he said. "They were cruising along the Chao Phraya river and filming wherever they thought was beautiful.

"It is just a matter of different cultures. We told them, and they stepped back. It's no problem."

Eighty-one contestants are vying for the crown in the contest.

Organisers say this year's pageant will showcase Thailand's recovery from the tsunami disaster five months ago and convince tourists that the region is safe to visit.
