I was woken by my son this morning as he was scared to go down stairs because he'd seen a spider on the wall in the front room. Well it did'nt like the bug spray and after a jump and a chase around the room with me jumping as well he gave up and died. I have posted 2 pictures so if anyone can say if it is dangerous or just big and scary please let me know.I have looked on the internet (spiders Thailand) but cannot find it.I have killed one of these in my bathroom in Pattaya while on a trip before. The worrying thing was it was behind the toilet and I had sat on that pan for 3 days already!! Oh yes I'am up in the north..Dave

I believe it is called a huntsman spider. Not dangerous but runs very fast, so may cause heart failure :)

Yes I can say for sure that the "bugger" ran fast.....Jumped like a "Roo" as well....

I've had those around for years, they are big but, on the plus side, they eat the cockroaches and other nasty bugs. I prefer to let mine be and get on with their business but then I don't have a fear of spiders. :)

Yes its a huntsman and as far as I know you just about have to squeeze them before they will bite. And yes they love cockroaches in my experience. The locals say they bite but I have been living with them for years and never had a bad experience, although I too dont fear spiders. Now centepedes, thats a different story...been bitten four times in 6 months, fortunately only babies, but not looking forward to further encounters :D

First of all www.fotosizer.com is the best free photo resizer on the internet and simple to use

No need to upload a 3.9 mb file when you can do the same thing for 60KB

This is actually a small one, they can grow to 11.8" legspan

Read all about them here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huntsman_spider

There are very fast, do not seem to bother much with people and do est large insects like cockroaches and others

Scary to see but if you realize they are not out to get you, your fear will subside

Let them on their way is the best thing

Thanks for the info..No I'am not scared when I know where they are but when they jump or you come by them by chance now thats another story...From what I can see now is that they are not dangerous and if I find another bugger I will show it the door..In the Uk we have a house spider which we affectionatly call a "Carpet Thumper" sometimes nearly as big as the one I found today...The trouble is if you put them out they come back in when you leave a door or window open!!! I hope the "Huntsman" stays outside..Its been good although a shame it had to die but my 6 year old has a better understanding of spiders now and has been showing it to the neighbours.....Proud as punch...Just a side note, the maid swears they are killers and one bite will kill you!!!lol.Genuine ignorance as they say....Maybe she wears a red shirt on her day off!!! A joke please do not delete..

Thanks all Dave now a little wiser...

PS thanks for the phot resizer!!! Have needed one of them for a long time..Now maybe I can have my own "Avatar"

My Thai wife says they can give a painful bite but will only bite if hurt. They are quite shy and I allow them in the house to do whatever they want. They don't last long because the jing joks eat them. If you don't bother them, they will avoid you if possible. And yes, they can move quickly.

are there any venomous, aggressive household type spiders in Thailand that we should be aware of? I get these little critters all the time and I kill them because I'm phobic (twice spiders have crawled across my head before sleeping in other countries...no shit) but I always apologize as they got the same right to be here, etc...

we've got a crawling infant human in our house so I ask (I am also a big sissy and arachnids scare the shit outta me)...I live in a built up area without a garden (shophouse) but with marshland to the rear...the birds that live back there usually eat most of them...
