I actually don't know what I mean. :):D

That's why I'm asking for advice...

I do know that I want a wide-screen.. what the current sizes are, I don't.

So if it's 16:9 then that will do.

Thanks,

CS

16:9 is like the telly gives you the picture in a better ratio.

I like Asus or Samsung Laptops but have 14in screens.

Take your wife and let her look around.

How about these... From Acer

OOOPPPPPsssss....

Guess I should have mentioned the 25,000 Baht price range!!!!

And no way either my wife or I need 3D.

Thanks,

CS

Asus UL are very good and lightweight or the Samsung X418 DA02TH (no DVD drive is external) but very slim and lightweight

I will just also throw my two satang in.

I have an Asus notebook, its absolutely EXCELLENT, it wasnt from the cheaper end of the range, its now 2.5 years old and has been dragged around Australia in the back of a 4x4 & also done its fair share of global work. I bought it in Australia and It came with a worldwide 2 year warranty and 2 days before the warranty was up I took it to Asus BKK as a small crack had developed on the case near the hinge.....they logged the job and replaced the entire casing a few weeks later after sourcing the parts.

3 friends now have also bought Asus on my advice. All 4 notebooks are great, ive used them all, 2 of them a fair bit.

If you take a look at Asus online, you will soon realise there are millions of models with all types of specs, THEY are certainly worth a look. I feel a 17 inch screen is too big, 15.4 (or around that) is generally good enuf. I don't like the resolution of the new LCD screens but they use less power. My Asus has a WSFGA screen and its really clear, great to work with. We are still on the original battery too and it gets used all the time, a little tired now compared to new.

Dig around online before you go near any stores, work out what you want then go price shopping.

Hi,

17 inch laptops are heavy!

15 inch is probably your limit if you want something portable and not too heavy. If you're looking at a core2duo 2.66 or higher then you'd be hard pushed to find anything less than 30000 in the shops.

However you might be able to get a new i5 notebook (i5 is replacing core2duo). i5 laptops are coming in at around 27000+vat at the moment.

I am selling my DELL VOSTRO (shameless plug!...you can see it in the Thai Visa classifieds). The other reason I bring it up though is that it's a 14 inch, core2duo 2.4 cpu, 300gb hard disk, 4GB ram system. I was looking at comparable notebooks in the shops (hence the reason why i know the prices right now)...and couldn't find anything for less than about 28000 baht.

So I guess the question is does she really need such a powerful machine? If not then those asus lightweight notebooks might be enough - the ones with the core solo cpus. They run nicely and look and feel good too. It's all a matter of necessity really. If she isn't going to do anything too intensive then a cheaper, lighter notebook might be the answer!

Hope that helps

If you are going to Canada soon, then I would advise you to wait and buy there. All OS's are genuine and the laptops are less expensive than here in Thailand.

I Agree...for some reason technology seems to be quite a bit more expensive here. Silly really seeing as so much stuff is manufactured here or in surrounding countries.

We are going for an Immigration Visa, so it may take anywhere from 5-11 Months to actually make the move, and we have some need for it to help prepare our trip.... But Buying there is something we should take into consideration, of course.

Hmmm... Just had another thought....

Get her a small Desktop in Canada (More bang for the Buck, anyway...) and get a small Net-book here to use for the stuff I need mobility for... Mainly Catalog photos and some Word & Excel documents... Besides the Net-book can also be used for checking Email, and quick browsing, etc.

Something to think about ????

buy it in Canada or when you cross over the border into US. within 5-11 month, more new PC technology should be available.

I just returned from the US and there are a ton of PC's under $500. the samsung PC (didn't really look at the model#) was below the

$500 retail but looked attractive.

DELL Precision M6400 :)

Have a look at this one Acer AS5740G-334G32Mn has core i3CPU, 4Gb Ram, HD5470 graphics with HDMI, 320 GB HDD very good value and in your budget, screen is 15.6 though.

Try the Toshiba Satellite A505

Windows 7, Intel Core 2 Duo T6600

4 GB DDR2 Ram, 500GB HDD

16" HD True Brite Widescreen Display

8 hour battery life

I have one and its is quite a good laptop.

Stay away from Acer
