Laptop With Sim Card Slot

Featured Replies

Hi, I noticed some laptops come with built in sim card slot. I suppose it's for sim card purpose right?

I'm currenly using a USB plug in aircard I bought from DTAC to access the internet.

Is it possible to insert my DTAC sim card into the built in sim card slot and access the internet without the use of USB plug in aircard?

Anyone try before? Does it work?

My HP mininote has one SIM slot under the batteries and I am using a TH GMS card for edge/gprs [waiting 3g to be available all around Thailand].

It's ok, just take out the burden of having an external USB aircard to carry around...

My laptop has 2 such slots, they are for memory stick from your camera.

You can get with proper sim card slots. The little ACER 3G One netbooks have got them. Really easy to use and nice. I'm a fan...

but netbooks are slow... If you're happy with your current setup, stick with it...

I am using an Edge modem that I brought for 1199baht and its great on DTAC but slow on 12call.

I have used this modem in the UK on Tmobile and orange but not on O2,

it comes with a lot of the major networks world wide built in.

What I like is being able to swap between networks for the promotional packages

My aussie mate has the Acer that you can slot a sim in and reckons it works 100% once set up

and I have asked him to try a few different sims in it,,,,Colino

My gf is using HP mini too and her laptop has a sim card slot.

Do you mean I can slot my DTAC sim card in and access the internet without the use of a USB aircard anymore?

Any software installation required? Really hate having the USB aircard sticking out of the laptop.

Thanks in advance.

One thing that the other posters aren't mentioning is that your laptop has to have a wireless (WWAN) modem built in for you to take advantage of the sim card slot...otherwise the inserted SIM card would just sit there.

There's really a couple ways of finding out if your machine has a built in modem. The first is to open up your device modem and look for it. If it's not there, sorry, you're out of luck. Or you can just unplug the modem attached right now, install the SIM card, and try and create a dial up connection.

I think that unfortunately you probably do not have a modem. If it wasn't a selling point, it probably wasn't installed. On that note, you can add a modem internally, but you have to find an unlocked one, get the antenna wires, and open your laptop up...which is not for the faint of heart.

You 2 guys are confusing Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards (asked about by o/p) and Secure Digital (SD) cards used in cameras etc. Slots for the latter are on almost all laptops these days.

When I was shopping for an urgent laptop replacement 2 years ago, I opted for the Asus U3. However, it was $1500 in the US versus £1300 in the UK for the same model so I bought it in the US.

The US model came with internal GPS hardware and software whereas the one for the Euro market had a SIM card hardware and GSM connection software instead. The GPS s/w people only support US maps so it's as much use to me as tits on a boar pig. It would have been nice to have the SIM/GSM option instead as I wouldn't think using a laptop for active navigation is as handy as being able to connect to the internet without added external widgets.
