Hi, I am a thai citizen, age 22, living in New York City attending school, who just recently found her thai birth certificate.

Well, basically, I wanted to get a Thai Passport and a Thai ID, but it's a confusing process for me.

I looked at the Thai Consule in New York (http://www.thaiconsulnewyork.com/english/visatype.php), and I am confused by the Visa type. Tourist visa? I have no interest in visiting Thailand until I graduate in 2 years, but my Thai Uncle insist that I at least obtain a Thai passport. So, what type do I apply for...?

If you are trying to get a Thai passport, then why would you want a Thai visa? A passport and a visa are not the same thing. (Of course you knew that.)

If you get a Thai passport, then you don't need a visa to travel to Thailand.

If the visa is for your passport, then ask yourself, why are you going to Thailand? Make sure that you at least have a passport first. You can't get a Thai visa without a passport.

If you are able to get your Thai passport, please let us know also. Many people want to know.

Who need to apply for a visa to go to Thailand?

- Passport holders of countries that do not appear on the list below will require a visa before entering Thailand.

- Travelers entering Thailand for purposes other than tourism need a visa of specific type, i.e. non-immigrant visa.

Try calling the different consulates in LA, Chicago and New York and also the Embassy in DC. Ask the same questions of each and hopefully you'll get at least one person that is both knowledgeable and willing to help. Be sure to first make it clear that youe are a citizen by birth with a Thai Birth Certificate.

You normally need a Thai national ID before being able to get a Thai passport. It may be easier to do this in Thailand while visiting there.

In either case do not leave the US without a US passport even if you manage to get a Thai passport while in the US. You would need the US Passport to get back in. You would then enetr and exit thailand with your Thai passport and enter the US with your US passport.

You do not need a Thai ID card to obtain a passport overseas so for a person without one it is highly advised to obtain the passport overseas. That birth certificate is key. If that proves you are Thai a passport can be issued. If the birth certificate is not issued in Thailand the Consulate would have to confirm and issue you a new certificate. But you can obtain a passport and when you visit Thailand take care of registering on a home register and obtaining a Thai ID card. The Consulate will be able to guide you.
