Passport Renewal

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

I need to get a new passport next month, are there any companies on Samui which organise this?

Cheers.

Didn't I read somewhere that you now had to go to Singapore for that ? :D The British consul will tell you. www.help4brits.org :)

Just done a Google and it appears it is Hong Kong see here

Normally passports are issued by the respective embassy in BKK. The German Consul can issue a temporare one (green) which is valid for one month provided you supply a police report that your normal passport has been lost or stolen. A permanent one (red) can only be issued through the German embassy in BKK. However, even that one is printed in Berlin, Germany.

I would think for a British passport it will be a similar procedure.

Since earlier this month, British Passports are no longer issued by the Embassy in Bangkok. The British Consulate-General in Hong Kong is the issuing office for British Passports in SE Asia.

However you only apply directly to Hong Kong if you are renewing an undamaged full or expiring passport. If you need a new passport for any other reason you still have to submit via the British Embassy in Bangkok and they send to HK for processing.

you can still take your passport to the embassy in Bangkok for them to check everything through and they will then send everything on to Bangkok. If you are going to do it this way make sure you get to the embassy as near as possible to 0800 when they open they start to get very busy as the morning progresses and they close between 1100 and 1300 for lunch.

We did it last week and it was all very easy.

You can either travel to BKK yourself and see the British embassy who will then forward it to Hong Kong for processing. Send it via EMS to BKK who will again forward it to Hong Kong for processing. If you send it by EMS, make sure everything on the form is correct, photo size, counter signature etc... otherwise it can turn into a headache.

Not sure what the time scale is with the issuing happening in Hong Kong, but they still say they aim to have it back to you within 10-15 days.

Good to know, thanks.

Last week I re-newed my passport which was due to expire in May 2010. I did this by sending my passport by EMS to the Brittish Embassy in Bangkok.

I just downloaded the application form from the Brittish Embassy website in Bangkok.

Its very easy to follow and complete.

Fill out a bank draft at the post office for payment.

Include a pre-paid self addressed envelope and 2 passport size photographs.

It took 3 weeks to be processed and sent back to me on Samui.

Cost me just over 7,000 baht.

I wasnt even aware that the Bangkok Embassy had sent it on to Hong Kong for processing!!

If thats the case, then the turnaround time was pretty good.
