We are thinking of driving up to Srinakarin national park next w/e (3rd to 5th of June) - any advice on where we can stay - budget, house boat or camping. (prices?)

Also there any access for 4wd vehicles around there?

I've stayed in Kanchanaburi before and climbed Erehwon Falls before but would like to go up north a bit more to the lake.

( I know that Erehwon is not the usual spelling but this way it's "nowhere" backwards)

If you mean Srindon Lake/national park in Ubon province, there are some great places round that area. The Khong Chiam Kohsong resort hotel is a wonderful Hotel situated on the banks of the Mekhong adjacent to the Two Coloured River. Easy access to all the tourist attractions in the area. Rooms are from around 1,500 to 2,750 for a suite. On the same lines but considerably cheaper is another Resort in Khong Chiam just beneath the white Wat. Rooms their start around 500. In the Tana National Park, just outside Khong Chiang accommadation is available on a grander scale. 3,5,8 & 10 bed chalets are available. These work out at around 300 per person when filled. The Srindhorn Dam also has rooms available. On the lake at the top end are a number of restaurants that are in the water. Tables/huts in use depend on the time of year, and how accessible they are. But I wouldn't hold much hope this time of year. A lot of the attractions are North of Khong Chiam; National parks, mushroom rock formations, rock paintings, waterfalls; in fact there's so much to do. Hope this has been a help to you, and any other of our readers.

Srinakarin Dam - Kan - 130 km long.

large.jpg

large.jpg

Taken this year. Should be looking much better by now as the rains have come BTW.

Srinakarin Dam Wall on the right of this photo. :o

large.jpg

As for accommodation and prices ???? :D Do not know.

One place to start is the TAT office in Kan on the main road (on the left) before the Main Police Station which is on your right. The bus there turns left to the Bus Terminal at these lights.

I have been to one place there on the Reservoir a few years ago Lake Resort (or something like that) not Erawan Lake Resort btw, it was on the main road over the mountain which houses the Dam, 2 km up and 4 km down, then a little further on your left the first resort. Look nice to me.

Also there any access for 4wd vehicles around there?

Bring one from BKK.

Good Luck :D

Yours truly, :D

I'm appear to be getting some very odd replies!?!?! Is there something in the water up there???

I'm aware as how to get there, I've driven to the dam once before but I'm not aware of any facilities available up there

Not so interested in transliteration on your map either really...

Wilko,

I live in Kan, so I do not have to stay up there on Srinakarin Reservoir, but sure there are many places to stay there , catering mosty for the Thais.

Take a Thai with you as most signs are in Thai to the Resorts.

It should be nice and green now, but I would not recommend you staying on any raft unless it is in a real sheltered place, due to the winds and 1 mtr waves when the wind does blow.

As you must know being there before, it only takes appox. 1 hour from Kan to get to the dam and then about another 40 odd km to the Ferry (signs are in English). Across this one and you are in the wilds apart from the Amphor, did not see anything else as it was only a day trip btw (not looking to stay).

Then onto another Ferry (no sign in English btw in 1999) and then to the Famous Water Fall :-

Huay Mae Khamin Waterfall (spelling also wong btw)

large.jpg

(This place is in Kanchanaburi Province. Go to Erawan Waterfall and just passed that there is a turn off to your left to Huay Mae Khamin National Park. Only 42 kms thereafter on a very rough no tarmac road you will reach it. I went the long way around on an easier way, on two ferries across the Srinakarin Reservoir. Great views there as well along that way. Go during the "Rainy Season" then the Waterfall should be as full as you have see in my photo.

Should you wish to go there, take a Thai with you that knows the area and way.

Took me 4 hours there, 1 click as you saw, 4 hours back with a whole group of people. On your own it should not take you that long.)

Great place to go, but careful, do go during the week if you Kan, BKK tourist Mak-Mak on weekends. :o

Happy days. :D:D:D

Yours Truly :D

Kan Win :D

P.S. Btw. I have seen Pattaya spelt 3 different ways and Kan also in English, Lop, on the roads, but sure, in Thai it must be spelt correct. Case of TiT me think. Old Lamp must be Khun-Fused by now with all of this. :D

Wilko,

As you must know being there before, it only takes appox. 1 hour from Kan to get to the dam and then about another 40 odd km to the Ferry (signs are in English). Across this one and you are in the wilds apart from the Amphor, did not see anything else as it was only a day trip btw (not looking to stay). Across this one and you are in the wilds apart from the Amphor, did not see anything else as it was only a day trip btw (not looking to stay).

Then onto another Ferry (no sign in English btw in 1999) and then to the Famous Water Fall :-

More signs in English now!

Well I got up to Sri Nakarin and spent a couple of beautiful days up there. Stayed at a resort on the lake – new people - spoke very good English and charged a colossal 1000 baht t per night! Good meal 100 baht a head, and 100 pipers at 350baht. To be fair we had good rooms with hot water, and there were also several rooms available at 250 baht as well.

The water level is a little low at present but it was beautifully clear and fine for swimming. I was sad to hear that they have plans to introduce jetskis there – it’s so quiet there now, I think that would be a travesty not to mention an environmental cock-up on a monumental scale.

I would certainly like to start a sailing club up there – any takers???

Drove on up to the Mae Khamin waterfall, had lunch at the really good restaurant there then walked up and had a swim in the waterfall.

The road from the first ferry to Si Sawat is now asphalted and a very pleasant drive, we then took a second, smaller ferry (160 baht!) to get to the waterfall. That road was unsealed and I would recommend 4WD, especially now it’s getting a bit wet.

On getting to the waterfall we saw signs “straight on “to Kanchanaburi - 109km. So next time I’m going to do that. As we had to return to the resort to pick up our other 2WD drive vehicle, we were not able to do it this time.

PS - Does annyone know if I can upload pictures from my computer to this thread or do I need a url?

Wilko, :D

Thank you for your feed back. :D

Went there on the 11th of this month, via the dirt track road :D (2 hours = 42 kms) and not by the ferries :D , would suggest you take the 2 ferries once again, better and smother. Came back using 1 ferry and the driving around. Nice views but no time left to take photos on that road.
