Two UDD core figures face jail term on grounds of defamation

BANGKOK, 22 April 2010 (NNT) — The Supreme Court of Thailand has issued a jail term for two core leaders of the anti-government United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) group on grounds of defaming the Thai Prime Minister, Abhisit Vejjajiva.

From the preliminary verdict, Mr Suporn Atthawong will face a 12-month jail term and a fine of 20,000 THB and Mr Thirachai Sankaew will face a 6-month jail term and a fine of 10,000 THB. The court has also required both defendants to report the court verdict in the Thai Rath and Thai Post newspapers for a period of three days. However, as it was the first time offence for both defendants, the jail term has been suspended for two years.

In 2002, both defendants held a press conference at the Parliament, stating that Mr Abhisit failed to report his assets to the National Anti-Corruption Commission. At the time, Mr Abhisit was Minister to the Prime Minister's Office under Mr Chuan Leekpai's administration. He sued both defendants for defamation, claiming that his financial assets came from family inheritance.
