Supposedly my employer will cancel my work permit tomorrow morning after I signed all the necessary papers they needed. I am heading to Laos tonight to apply for a new non-b for a new employer.

I currently have non-b extension of stay and a multiple re-entry permit. How does this non-b get cancelled? is it at the border? or at the Thai embassy in Laos.

I am asking because I may actually have left Thailand in the morning before my work permit is cancelled and need to know if I Thai immigration need to have this on their system when I leave Thailand so they know to cancel the non-b and extension of stay in my passport.

Thanks

Your should have a letter from employer to visit Immigration with to cancel your extension/re-entry permit.

Just telephoned my agency they said I do not need a letter but I am not convinced they know what they are talking about. Apparently when my work permit is cancelled tomorrow it will automatically cancel my non-b extension of stay and multiple re-entry permit. I guess it shows up on the system as I leave Thailand that my extension of stay needs to be cancelled (provided I leave after my work permit is canceled.)

Is there a number at immigration that I can get a Thai person to call to find out exact details?

Thanks

Details: Your extension of stay based on employment becomes invalid the day your employment finishes. Ideally you turn up at immigration on your last day of work with a letter from your employer stating the date your employment terminated and immigration will cancel your employment extension of stay. You then immediately have to leave Thailand or make arrangements for another extension of stay from immigration. If by chance your original visa, for example a multiple-entry Non "B", is still valid you could fall back on it.

Like what lopburi3 mentioned, get the letter to the immigration office to cancel your re-entry.

The immigration at the airport or border have no authority to cancel it, even if you show a letter to them they will not do anything but advise you to go to the immigration office when you return to cancel it. This happened to me, i managed to get another visa (o) in KL even without canceling my previous active re-entry. As you re-enter thailand, the immigration would will only acknowledge your latest Visa (if you have one) and ignore the active re-entry you had inside earlier.

Thanks for the info. I am starting to understand now.

Do I still have 7 days from the day my work permit is canceled?

I really planned on going to Laos tonight but it might be safer to insist on a letter from my employer and cancel my non-b extension of stay tomorrow in Bangkok and leave for Laos tomorrow night.

Thanks for the information. I think the best thing is to pester my employer for a letter first thing in the morning then go to immigration and cancel my existing non-b then head straight to Lao. It's just not worth the gamble otherwise. Does anyone know approximately long it will take at immigration to cancel my non-b???

It's quite frustrating that my employer does not know the procedure for all this. They have already kept me hanging around in Bangkok for a few days.

Thanks for your help again.

If you want a 7 day extension, it will cost you 1900 baht.

Perhaps I should have explained the question more clearly, I meant to ask how long will I be required to wait at immigration for my non-b to be canceled;

- if its the usual fun filled day I will get the overnight coach to Nongkhai tomorrow evening.

-If I can be in and out quickly I will go straight to the border and pay the overstay fee of 500bht to avoid 1900bht for a one week extension.

If you directly go to the boarder within a reasonable period of time after your extension of stay is canceled, there should be no overstay fine. Nobody on this forum claims to be able to predict how immigration will respond to a given set of circumstances. The most mundane task can and often does take hours.
