My husband and I are moving to Thailand next month. He is coming for Work and I will be coming as a spouse. We have been told by his employer that they are going to take care of all the Visa requirements, etc after we arrive and have told us to just get a Tourist Visa for now and we will apply for the change in Visa's once there. He will change to a Non-Immigrant "B" and I will get an Non-Immigrant "O". The Tourist Visa requirement is that we need a round-trip ticket so we need to know how long the Tourist Visa is good for. Some say 30 days, some 60 days, does anyone know for sure? We want to book the return flight as far away as possible so that in case the Work Visa takes longer than expected, we won't have to lose the ticket money or be forced to leave. Have any one you done the Visa's this way, having only a Tourist Visa upon arrival? It all sounds a bit screwy to me but we will do whatever works. Thanks.

To the best of my knowledge you would have to leave Thailand to get the Non Imm 'B' and 'O' visas. This can be achieved in many neighbouring countries. Others with a lot more experience than me on this topic will hopefully respond. :)

In general, it is very difficult to change tourist visa status to non immigrant B status based on employment.

However, maybe the employer of your husband is a big BOI (Board of Investment) sponsored company, in which case they would be able to do as they told your husband.

If the status of your husband's visa cannot get changed to non immigrant B within Thailand, he could still apply for the work permit, then take a short trip to a neighboring country (Laos, Malaysia) and get the non immigrant B visa there.

For yourself, it doesn't really matter what visa you are on. Once your husband is on non immigrant B visa status and has received his one year extension based on his employment, you can get a 1 year stay as well based on piggybacking on your husband's 1 year extension (you do have to be legally married).

Your tourist visa get's you 60 days on arrival, and on that you can get a 30 day extension at a local immigration office, for a maximum stay of 90 days without leaving the country.

When you hold a tourist visa there is NO requirement for a return ticket!

Only when traveling without a valid visa (when you'll get a 30 day "visa free" stamp on entering Thailand) you have to hold a valid outbound ticket.

1. What is your nationality? That determines the days allowed on a tourist visa entry. For most it is 60 days that can be extended 30 days. There is no requirement for more than a one-way ticket for air travel but Consulate may want to see outbound ticket or itinerary to issue the visa itself.

2. Why can the business not issue a simple letter so husband can obtain a non immigrant B visa? If a company told me to just get a tourist visa I would expect a scam and that they would be expecting me to work without a work permit. Be careful.

3. Only after husband obtains a one year extension of stay (would not happen without work permit) can spouse obtain non immigrant O visa and then a matching extension of stay. This will require a trip out of Thailand to obtain the visa in every case I have seen reported.

As Lopburi posted above. The company should send you all the documentation to apply for a Non Immigrant B in your own country, if your husband works here on a tourist visa, it could be very difficult if he was found out. Be careful, ask the company for the paperwork as you would feel safer getting a Non Imm B in your own country.

It would be far more sensible for your husband to obtain the correct visa before coming here. His new employer should provide the paperwork for him to apply at your nearest embassy/consulate.

Coming here on a tourist visa, especially on a VOA (Visa on Arrival) 30 Days (depending on your nationality - some get 15 days only), may be a recipe for disaster.

As everyone has said. Get the Visa in the U.S before you come.

My thoughts also.

Another possibility, is that the company does not understand what is required, which can be equally dangerous.

You change change a tourist visa into a non-immigrant visa if you have 15 days or more left on the visa. (Check that, as not sure)

So long as you have all the documents needed by immigation, it can be done.

You can only convert a tourist visa entry if you have 21 days remaining and qualify for extension of stay and there is a 2,000 baht fee involved as well as a trip to an office that will do this. Many people will not qualify for extension of stay so would not be able to use this service.

Hi, my Thai gf is under the impression I can change my 60 day tourist visa to a non-imm B at Chaeng Wattana as long as I have at least 15 days left on the tourist visa. I've already extended it by 30 days but I still have over 15 days left.

The mfa govt website states it's at the discretion of the officer (scroll down and look under additional information).

You can only convert a tourist visa entry if you have 21 days remaining and qualify for extension of stay and there is a 2,000 baht fee involved as well as a trip to an office that will do this. Many people will not qualify for extension of stay so would not be able to use this service.

Does this mean that if I've already extended my tourist visa by 30 days I've effectively used my extension of stay so therefore don't qualify?

No. But you must have 21 days reaming on your permitted to stay stamp
can we do that change from TR to non-immi at every immigration office of our choice?

or is that done at certain immigration offices only? what are the fees?

is this exchange described in writing somewhere?

Expect to be send to Bangkok, although Jomtiem immigration is also willing to convert. Chinag Mai for example will send you to Bangkok.
