Agriculture Ministry prepares to solve falling fruit prices

BANGKOK (NNT) -- The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives is preparing to formulate measures to solve the falling price of fruits and off-season rice this month due to an expected oversupply problem in the market.

Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Theera Wongsamut admitted that many types of agricultural goods would experience decreasing prices this month, especially for off-season rice and many kinds of fruits after oversupply is expected in the market.

About 1.745 million tons of off-season rice, 229,000 tons of durian, 100,000 tons of rambutan, and 64,000 tons of mangosteen will be supplied to the market. The amounts accounted for 20.8%, 34.8%, 27%, and 23% of the total amount produced by farms.

Mr Theera stated that the ministry from 1 May to 15 June 2010 would utilize 116 million THB budget received from the Fruit Management for Farmers Committee to manage 73,590 tons of fruits supply in the east, which accounts for about 10% of the total amount produced.
