Deadline looms for Thai Red Shirts

The leader of Thai anti-government protesters has urged supporters to surround any armoured vehicles that converge outside their demonstration site in Bangkok, to prevent them from dispersing Red Shirt protesters.

The reaction comes after Thailand's army warned it would seal off the protest site at 1100 GMT on Thursday after Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva shelved plans for early elections. Initial efforts for talks to try and reach a deal have broken down.

BBC reporter Rachel Harvey believes the government's threat is extremely serious.

BANGKOK: -- An outspoken red shirt leader Lt Gen Khattiya Sawasdipol is shot and suffers a gun wound on the head on Thursday.

He was reportedly being treated in intensive care unit at Hua Chiew Hospital.

His condition is believed to be serious.

The incident happened shortly after the government sealed off the roads surrounding the rally site, shut off electricity, cut off water supply and all transportation around the site.

Reporters at the scene reported that they heard what they believed were bomb explosions and gunfires.

Nation television channel reported that an unknown number of people were injured from the explosions and are sent to a nearby hospital.
