Pheu Thai condemns use of violence against red shirts

By The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The Pheu Thai Party Friday condemned the government for its use of force against the red shirts and demanded the prime minister to step down as a gesture of responsibility for the casualties of innocent people.

Chief opposition whip Witthaya Buranasiri said Abhisit Vejjajiva no longer had the legitimacy to cling to office.

"The government has abused its power in trying to dislodge the crowds from the Rajprasong rally site," he said.

Witthaya said the security forces had failed to follow the crowd control procedures as ordered by the Civil Court, resulting in a huge number of deaths and injuries.

He called for all sectors of society to demand for Abhisit's resignation. The main opposition party would consider the government ex-communicated so long as Abhisit refused to step down, he said.

Among the measures for ex-communication included the possibility for Pheu Thai MPs to boycott the House meeting next week, he said.

The House is scheduled to hold its last session on Wednesday before its recess on Friday.

Pheu Thai MP Wichan Meenchainan called for the National Counter Corruption Commission to launch a probe into the April 10 violence. He said the government had no justification to invoke the emergency rule in order to crackdown on the red shirts.

In a separate development, the National Human Rights Commission issued a statement calling for all sides to immediately stop the use of force and resume negotiations before violence would spiral out of control causing irreparable divisions.

The NHRC voiced utmost concern for violence related to the Rajprasong rally. The loss of life, a gross violation of human rights, has continued unabated, including latest incidents happened on Thursday, it said in the statement.

"The NHRC would like to plead for all sides to put the national interest above everything else in order to return to the negotiating table and those refusing the talks are the ones bent on harming the country."

Thaksin urges Thailand to stop crackdown on protesters; resume talks

BANGKOK (TNA) -- Thailand's ousted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra on Friday demanded that Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva order troops to stop dispersing anti-government protesters and return to their barracks and resume negotiations with protesters to find a peaceful solution.

Mr Thaksin’s legal advisor Noppadol Pattama sent the former prime minister’s statement to the media by e-mail after the latest clashes between troops and protesters not far from the protest site in Ratchaprasong.

One person died and 12 were injured in the clashes, a spokesman for the emergency services said.

Mr Thaksin asked the premier to revoke the enforcement of the emergency decree in all provinces immediately and open negotiation with protesters to find peaceful means to resolve political turmoil.

Reconciliation approach should be based on justice, kindness and sincerity, the statement said.

"Now the country still has a way out and the prime minister can prevent immediate losses and bring the country out of crisis. It's now up to the prime minister what he will choose between peaceful and violent means and between his politicial position and the life of innocent people," Mr Thaksin said, adding that he hopes the prime minister can make the right decision as Mr Abhisit earlier stated that people must come first.

Mr Thaksin also expressed deep sorrow for families of the dead and the injured, who are civilians, soldiers and police.

The statement also said it is apparent that the government is using forces armed with heavy weapons and snipers in a violent crackdown on the anti-government protesters, leading to losses of life and casualties on Thursday despite the earlier announcement of the prime minister’s reconciliation roadmap.

The government can simply avoid losses if Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban surrenders to the police and acknowledges charges concerning the April 10 clashes as demanded by the protesters, Mr Thaksin said in his statement. (TNA)

Germany "urgently" advises against travel to Bangkok

By Deutsche Presse Agentur

Berlin - The German foreign ministry expressed "great concern" at the violent clashes in the Thai capital Bangkok on Friday, and "urgently" advised against travel to the city.

The German embassy had scaled back its work to a bare minimum but remained open - unlike some other embassies - a foreign ministry spokesman said.

The ministry had warned last month about the tense situation in the Thai capital, where an anti-government protest camp has come under siege from thousands of Thai soldiers.

The latest warning did not include Bangkok airport, which remained safe for transit passengers, the ministry spokesman said.

One demonstrator was killed in Friday's clashes, in the heart of Bangkok's posh commercial district.
