I think the old sex-tourist haunts like soi 7,8 etc are probably dying. Upmarket areas such as Central are very busy, at least during weekends. Pattaya seems to be changing.

In your dtreams, I've seen reports like this since 1992 and nothing changes. But the dreamers live on in eternal hope.

They can build all the chintzty shopping malls they like but nobody goes to Pattaya for the shopping.

Nobody.

Try half of bangkok (the half with money).

Go have a look at soi 7, 8, postoffice, yamato, they're dead.

You're the dreamers

I think everybody must be at the Floating Market, parking taking up two lanes of Sukhumvit again, and the back car park is full!! :D

A license to print money, don't you just know the people who bought houses in the Beverly Thai House development next door just love trying to get into their entrance :)

It is low season and the country is in the middle of a violent insurrection that has been televised all over the world. Do you think that could possibly be it? :)

I was out on WS last night(just to go to the disco). Crowded as usual with your typical cheap gawkers out gawking and not going into the bars(you can guess which nationalities :) )

I have no idea what the draw of WS is. I mean, really. If I wanted to get laid I'd head to Soi 6,7, or 8. Not Ripoff Street. And I'm not keen on rubbing shoulders with Russians and smelling rotten armpits.

Outside of WS, it's like a different world. I visited a gogo on Soi 6 and was the only guy in there for awhile. Some cheap charlies came in but didn't buy many drinks.

Sorry Phil, hate to disagree with you but my wife and I went to Pattaya for a few days last week and other then laying round our condo and eating out the only other thing we did was a little shopping.

I think you should say........" not many people go to Pattaya for the shopping".

Pattaya is definately changing...it has done in the last 5 years alone, and a lot of people do go there to shop and enjoy the nightlife and restaurants.

Most people know that they are pushing most things back to soi baukaow and even 3rd now,the master plan is for when those Casinos can be built and incorporated into malls and hotels.

Then one day there will be more Thais there spending there gains than westerners...True i kid you not.

If you had to escape the fighting in Bangkok, where would you go? :D

So,one mall crowded and all the others empty.Does that read as Pattaya crowded?

Central Pattaya Beach very busy this evening, many Thais and foreigners. The cinemas up stairs were also doing good business. We saw Robin Hood. Just something slightly bizarre about watching a movie about medieval England in a Thai cinema with an Aussie star doing an Irish accent however TIT! :)

One day it will happen, gambling will take over and the asians will be the main spenders their, there has been a lot of activity regarding the laws on gambling in Thailand in the not to distant future it has to be allowed(casinos),they are losing a hel_l of a lot of money to surrounding countries at present, they will not let that continue and are already changing Pattaya to accomodate the hi-so asians.

yes, and these are exactly the types that have no money and/or don't buy drinks at the bars. they just walk up and down WS and gawk and stink everything up. is this a positive development?

I noticed they had bulldozed a couple bar complexes b/n beach rd and 2nd road. This may very well be a trend. I suspect the bar scene will gradually move further east along with it's western clientelle. You will gradually see the city break up into ethnic zones, as Westerners don't really enjoy being around arrogant, rude, cheap, smelly people(nationalities undisclosed). :)

Its ridiculous to say that just because people are spending less in the beer bars that Pattaya is quiet.

All it means is the beer bars industry is in decline, but other pursuits in the town are booming, including shopping. Try Royal Garden Plaza or Central. They are really busy. At times many of the restaurants in the malls have queues to get a table.
