I have just heard on the phone that red shirt protesters have disrupted power supplies and are burning vehicles in Udon Thani

Unconfirmed reports from Thai media says the protesters didn't want to stop dispite the leaders' plea, and that Central World is on fire?

ActIIScene1 rolling...and this time, noone to blame. 'sincerely hope this wudnt spiral "really" out of control (of anyone)...

I am happy those leaders came to their senses and did the right thing, both for their own followers and the other people of Thailand. I hope they get a fair trial and sentence.

like the yellow shirt leaders have??

can it gymboy. this "if the yellows can do it why can't we" reminds me of what my mother used to tell me as a little boy, "If Johnny went and laid down in the middle of the road would you be as stupid as him?". go talk to somchai and samak & the failed PPP government as to why the yellows were allowed to shut down the airport. That was their responsibility.

This is the end of Thai democracy fight.

Last to leave, don't forget to turn off the lights.

deep social processes can run for generations before they prevail, with ups and downs.

democratisation of thailand, started some 10 years ago, might come to a halt, but the infighting within the power elit (this might be coming shortly, within a year or two), will give an incentive for a constitutional change.

People will try to voice their demands over and over again - they now know, they can talk openly about politics and they want to elect their representatives.

Protests from bangkok might be spreading now to many other towns, with greater popular support and might not be contained as easily as in bangkok - in the north the great majority are reds and pinkish, police and army wouldn't want to be involved to the extend they were used in bangkok

I don't understand why these people are allowed to make comments as they have the right and second chance for the last word. Allowing them to say we will continue the fight can only mean one thing to the majority of the "protesters". I wonder if the protesters think they were doing the right thing and should continue?

They were doing the right thing and the struggle will continue. The civil rights movement in the US took over a century and was pushed forward by many great people and a few violent ones like the Black Panthers and the Weather Underground. I'm sure Thailand will be similar. As long as the wheel rolls forward!

Does anyone know what happened to the Yellow Shirt leaders, after they closed the airport in Dec 2008? I have not heard of any of them serving jail sentences right now (I could be wrong) if so, seems a bit unfair to me that they can close down the airport and get away scott free. Or could be something to do with the fact that their side came into government afterwards, so they escaped punishment?

It will be interesting to see what happens to the Red Shirt leaders

Yup, its pretty obvious to anyone with half a brain cell to see what is really going on, and the real reason why this pathetic government is holding on to power.

Does anyone know what happened to the Red Shirt leader Thaksin, after he robbed the country blind and set the nation ablaze? I have not heard of him serving jail sentences right now (I could be wrong) if so, seems a bit unfair to me that he can compromise and destroy a nation and get away scott free.

REPORT: Arisman, Weng and Suporn are on the run: Nation Channel

In honor of the fugitives.

How apt!

I hope that they keep running until their little wet blouses fall off.

Collectively they don't add up to one human being! Scum, cowards, why didn't they fall on their swords like real men! :):D

Mr T is smart enough and there is not a trace he is connected to the Bangkok riot. well, we know what his lawyer said already.

unless, all / some red leaders hand in some proof of connection !

This is the end for the RED.

This is the end for Thaksin.

This is the end for TRT/PPP/PT.

This is the end of Thai democracy fight.

nsf... the fat lady hasn't yet sung!

Agreed. They'll be back. I think they underestimated the willingness of the Army to pull the trigger and the sight of tanks rolling in made them realize they need to re-think. Thaksin will need to pony up a lot more than sticks, gas-soaked tires and home-made grenades, a few auto rifles and 500 baht/day to the protesters in light of a tank muzzle staring at them. The Army finally resolving to take strong, yet unfortunate by necessary action did the trick...for now.

almost almost . . . this is the end of the riot, not yet the end of the red movement ! the government AND the Thai people still have some work to be done !

will see !!

This is far from the end - soon is the time for major change in Thailand. Unfortunately, many more people will die in the struggle.

Most probably secret deals have already been struck, so not much IMO

Amnesty, or at least some form of leniancy for everyone who turns themselves in, with the exception of Arisman, Weng and Suporn

might explain why those three are on the run anyway

What is it with Thais and air pollution? the annual problem in CM every year and now setting tire on fire in Bkk and vehicles in Udon...

I hope they enforce ENV law to its fullest! No green veggies during their jail time...

CB

Considering the choas, quite impressive operation involving minimal loss of life; today, less than a speeding truck ramming a songtaew at an intersection...

1.) The Yellow went in a pacific demonstration to the airport that the local authorities decide themselves to close

the YS were in the airport building for 9 days, and the only thing they took was a couple of liters of ice cream that would have gone bad anyway. They did not touch any of the duty free goods, alcohol or cigarette that were left ungarded while they were "occupying" the airport. After they left, nothing was missing, nothing was damaged.

2.) If the YS did not confront the gouvernment at the time, which by the way was not Abhisit, today Thaksin would still be looting the country in total impunity. I am not sure the way they did was the best, I am not a YS Supporter but I must admit that it probably was the only way to get rid of Thaksin and his cohorts of hooligans. See what they can do today to attempt to regain control of the country

3.) How can you now try to compare the killing and destruction orchestrated by this egomaniac and his troops with a pacific demonstration that liberated the country?

So-called democracy has not worked in Thailand, will not work in Thailand as at every step money power is at work, as it is in the so-called advanced societies where the corporate behemoths have taken full control. It is a joke to talk about democracy. First thing is to teach, give real education as to what is the value of human life, teach respect for all life, AHIMSA and practice this. Practice is more important than precept. These men who have been terrorizing Bangkok's people for weeks are not sober, thoughtful, sincere citizens, they are indeed criminal terrorists.

But, I expect the leaders to get bail promptly and most like never go to jail at all. Firm, strong, leadership is required, but in Thailand I have not seen this in my 26 years living here.

Of course Thaksin should be behind bars.......... so should Abhisit and most definately Suthep for their involvlemtn in the murder of innocent civilians and reporters, along with the yellow leaders for their crimes committed in 2008.
