Thailand's Thaksin: "We never engage in violence"

SYDNEY: -- Thailand's exiled former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra on Thursday denied bankrolling the Red Shirt rebellion in Bangkok and said the warrant for his arrest on terrorism charges would be ignored by Interpol because it was politically motivated.

"We never, we never, engage in violence," Thaksin said in what Australian public broadcaster ABC claimed was his first telephone interview since the street protests subsided last week.

"We want to see reconciliation because the government always said about reconciliation, but the way they used the iron-fist approach, they are not using velvet-glove approach, that is mean they are more confrontation than more reconciliation," Thaksin said.

The billionaire businessman predicted that Interpol would not act on the arrest warrant the Thai government has issued.

4 police chiefs in Northeast transferred after local riots

BANGKOK (NNT) -- Four police commanders in northeastern provinces have been transferred to inactive posts for their failure to safeguard the provincial city halls from arsonists during the recent anti-government riots.

Acting National Police Chief Police General Pateep Tanprasert has ordered the removal of four police chiefs of Khon Kaen, Udon Thani, Mukdaharn, and Ubon Ratchathani provinces and reassigned them to perform duties at the Royal Thai Police headquarters.

The four police authorities include Khon Kaen Provincial Police Commander Police Major General Sakda Techakriangkrai, Udon Thani Provincial Police Commander Police Major General Decha Chuayboonchum, Mukadahan Provincial Police Commander Police Major General Pramote Iamthat and Ubon Ratchathani Provincial Police Commander Police Major General Sompong Thongveeraprasert.

The transfer order resulted from the officers’ failure to secure government offices in their areas, especially the provincial halls, from being set on fire by the anti-government protesters over the past week.

Armed forces told to beware of sabotage

In the face of fragile security, the Defence Ministry has instructed all military installations to take necessary precautions against acts of sabotage, spokesman Colonel Thanathip Sawangsaeng said Thursday.

The instructions came after Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwan had a meeting with top brass from the armed forces.

"Prawit voiced concern for possible attacks against storage facilities of arms and petroleum," Thanathip said.

At the meeting, the defence minister also urged military leaders to help the government bring about reconciliation, he said.
