BMA to install 10,000 CCTV in Bangkok area

BANGKOK (NNT) -- The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has expedited its plan to install 10,000 additional closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to ensure maximum safety to the public after many of them were made non functional by the rioters.

Mr Winai Limsakul, Director of the Traffic and Transportation Department, stated that 27 CCTV installed around 18 junctions throughout Bangkok were destroyed during the riots of the United Front of Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD).

Meanwhile, BMA spokesman Thanom Onketpon disclosed that the BMA’s previous plan was to install 20,000 more CCTV in many areas of Bangkok for a period of 4 years; however, the plan was accelerated by BMA Governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra as he viewed that CCTV was now a necessary equipment for Bangkok people who were recently affected by the protests and riots. The governor has ordered related BMA units to firstly install 10,000 more CCTV throughout Bangkok. The installation is expected to be completed within 18 months.

BMA to close Henri Dunant Rd for a trade fair

BANGKOK (NNT) -- The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration will consider closing Henri Dunant Road to allow entrepreneurs whose businesses were affected by the riots and arson attacks, to sell their goods after the recent success of the ‘Together We Can Grand Sale’ on Silom Road.

Deputy Bangkok Governor Taya Teepsuwan said the BMA would convene with business entrepreneurs and agencies along Henri Dunant Road to discuss the closure of the road to arrange another grand sale event for about 500 shop owners who did not participate in the grand sale event on Silom Road.

Under the plan, Henri Dunant Road will be closed on 5-6 June 2010 from 10.00 to 20.00 hrs with the total length of 800 meters. Entrances to Nang Loeng racing course and Chulalongkorn Hospital will be however excluded from the plan to provide thorough access.

The deputy governor added that the BMA would also consider closing Silom Road again for more trade fairs from 12 to 13 June 2010 and some parts of Soi Thong Lor from 19 to 20 June 2010.

Ms Taya continued to say that the BMA would also mull over weekly arrangements of walking streets in the next three to six months to assist business entrepreneurs who were affected by the political unrest.

A walking-street trade fair was arranged last weekend on Silom Road with a great success as hundreds of booths and unexpectedly large crowd of buyers participated.

Suthep says 4 monks arrested and defrocked properly for assisting armed red-shirt gunmen

Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban Monday explained that four monks were arrested for assisting gunmen who fired at the authorities on May 19.

Suthep was responding to allegations by the Pheu Thai MP Chaowarin Latthasaksiri. Chaowarin alleged that troops arrested respected able monks without justified reasons and improperly defrocked the monks without having senior monks defrock them.

Suthep explained that when troops were deployed to Soi Sarasin to check for weapons, gunmen on the Bangkok Cable building fired at them, killing one officer.

Suthep said when troops approached the building to arrest the gunmen, some protesters, including the four monks, blocked the security officials. Suthep said 40 protesters were arrested at the scene, including the four monks.

He said the officials had senior monks defrock the four monks properly and they are now being detained at the Bangkok Remand Prison pending prosecution.

NBT insists no signal problem in 9 NE provinces

The chief of Ubon Ratchathani NBT relay station insisted Monday that TV audiences in 9 northeastern provinces had no problem receiving live broadcast of censure debate.

Kitti Chansena, director of the Ubon Ratchathani relay station, said officials had checked and detected no reception problem in Ubon Ratchathani and eight other provinces.

The Ubon Ratchathani relay station beams NBT's signal to Si Sa Ket, Amnart Charoen, Buri Ram, Surin, Mukdahan, Nakhon Phanom, Roi Et and Yasothon.

Pheu Thai MPs alleged that the government ordered NBT to disrupt its own broadcast to northeastern provinces to prevent the public from being informed of the government's alleged wrongdoings.

UN calls for an independent probe into political violence

BANGKOK (NNT) -- United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay on Monday calls on the Thai government for an independent probe into the recent political violence.

UN has expressed concerns after Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva was accused of human right abuses by ordering troops to disperse the marathon rally of the anti-government United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD). The incidence resulted in 88 fatalities.

Mrs Pillay urges the government to bring human rights violators for prosecution. However, she admittedly stated that the Thai government had shown its commitment to end the political turmoil and attempted to restore order to the Kingdom, though the government’s operations must be in line with international standards on the use of security forces and detention methods.

Speaking at an intensifying parliamentary no-confidence debate on Monday, Mr Abhisit stated the troops were defending themselves against mysterious armed groups. The government had only planned to cordon off the rally site in order to pressure the UDD leaders to terminate the rally.
