Pattaya next port of call for "Grand Sale"

PATTAYA: -- The Commerce Ministry this weekend will hold a "Together We Can Grande Sale" fair in Pattaya, following the success in generating more than Bt140 million in sales this past weekend in Bangkok for vendors hit hard by the long red-shirt rally in the capital.

"The ministry will organise at least three such fairs around the country every weekend to help small vendors in Bangkok whose trade was badly affected by the the demonstration. The event is one of the efficient tools to increase financial liquidity for enterprises," Commerce Minister Porntiva Nakasai said yesterday.

The "Together We Can Grande Sale" will take place over the weekend along 4 kilometres of Pattaya Beach. More than 600 exhibitors from Bangkok are expected to take part.

At least 200,000 shoppers are expected to visit the walking and shopping event over Saturday and Sunday and generate more than Bt100 million in sales.

Porntiva said the event would not only help small vendors release their stockpiles, but also promote tourism growth in Pattaya and nearby provinces.

The ministry reported that over the past weekend's fair in Bangkok's Silom Road, sales of well over Bt140 million had been achieved. Some 1,650 small traders from the Rajprasong, Silom, Pratunum and Victory Monument areas that were affected by the red shirts' protest took part, while more than 400,000 shoppers visited the event.

Affected enterprises want the government to conduct more fairs for them, even though they have had to discount their prices by 20-80 per cent to generate good business.

The walking and shopping events are an important immediate measure to help increase cash flow for enterprises, Porntiva said.

Permanent secretary Yanyong Phuangrach said the Commerce Ministry now planned to ask for Bt300 million in additional budget from the government's Thai Khemkhaeng project to organise more frequent trade fairs, as part of the remedial measures for enterprises impacted by the lengthy rally.

The ministry has to date been financing the fairs from its own budget at a cost of Bt20 million per event. Vendors participating in the fairs each get a free booth.

It had previously planned to ask for Bt138 million for remedial measures under the ministry's responsibility. However, it now needs more budget for the organisation of trade events around the country this year.

Moreover, the ministry will conduct a series trade fairs in border provinces to stimulate spending and help traders. The first such fair kicks off today in Mukdahan.

The Government Saving Bank is also providing space at its head office on Phaholyothin Road in Bangkok for the sale of wares by customers whose shops at Centre One plaza, Silom and Siam Square were damaged during the recent violence.

Lersak Chuladesa, president and CEO of the bank, said small traders could sell their products at its HQ free of charge, starting yesterday.

The bank's head office will also be open for members of the general public who want to sell their products.

Moreover, Krung Thai Bank is providing space at its head office on Nana Road in Bangkok for traders who were affected by the recent unrest. They can sell their products from June 7-19, with the maximum capacity being about 100 booths.

President Apisak Tantivoravong said the bank and other organisations had arranged the "Taladnad Namjai Konthai Mai Thing Kan" event for this purpose.

The story says this is to help the small vendors in Bangkok. I guess they are going to pack all their wares and come to Pattaya? Aren't there enough street/sidewalk vendors already? I hope they announce the date in advance. More cheap stuff for sale.

Whilst I take your point about negativity, I also think if I am to spend money in these straightened times, I would rather pay it to people who live and work in Pattaya permanently and not to a load of money-chasing carpetbaggers from Bangkok.

And for what its worth, Fridays and Saturdays I pick up and drop off a work colleague who live's in soi 4, so yeah, on Saturdays I do commute to work Via beach road.

Pattaya, Shop on the Beach Spectacular a Huge Success

PATTAYA: -- The ‘Shop on the Beach Spectacular’ was a great success where hundreds of tourists from Pattaya, Bangkok and other areas shopped till they dropped.

Pattaya 5th June 2010 [PDN] on the stage opposite Soi 4 Pattaya Beach, Pattaya City’s Mayor Itthiphol Khunpluem welcomed and thanked those involved in the organizing of the spectacular “Pattaya Shop on the Beach” which was a huge success, receiving positive feedback from all departments.

Subsequently The Mayor invited Thailand’s Deputy Permanent secretary of Commerce Ministry Klitsada Piamphongsarn to comment on the object of the festivity and to encourage the participating operators to keep their spirits up after the recent crisis.

I went last night. There was some stuff being sold there that I haven't seen in Pattaya before, so that was good. The layout was a disaster, people were bumping into other and crushing each other in extreme ways. I would be surprised if there weren't injuries. The space between the booths at some points wasn't even big enough for two small people, much less a huge crowd. I ended up spending 500 baht and the purchases turned out to be a mistake, so I guess it was a success (for the vendors)!
