Funny I'm now into my third book on investing the other two continually referred to one book the Intelligent Investor, by Graham I reading that one now. The first two chapters are about the history of the market. Good thing I read the others first. Had I not I would have sold out all my stocks and thrown the book away. By reading the other two first it gives me the courage to hold on and finish the book. Scary stuff, sometimes ignorance is bliss :o

Man what a day SEt closed at 909.65

Profit is now 92,532

Guys that is a lot more then I believed I could do, just lucky.

Well Paul did his reports on the company visits came up with two new companies, so I will be selling off some lagards. I have qualified for the dividends already and that money will come next month.

I will also accumulate on two others that were recommended

Selling the lagard's will get me 80K to work with so no money out of my pocket.

Sold my 2nd round of TRUE stock today and took 55,000 baht profit. Using the freed up cash to buy PTT as the charts plus the XD date next week indicate an upward trend...plan to sell Monday all going well if the price increases +3.5% or more

Boy, what a close call today, the stock exchanges all around us including China dropped at opening today except for the KLCI

I sold out of the ones that I believed to have done the best they would for a while.

Accumulated those stocks that rode out the drop last time the best. Bought into the stocks recommended yesterday by Thaistocks

Managed to keep 25 K in the buy fund. I have one more to sale tomorrow. I can't sale it today as I will lose some nice dividends if I do.

Expat or anyone got any idea who will supply Electric transformers and power cable for the new power grids approved already.

I have been kicking myself about True, sometimes rumors are good aren't they

Wow- TRUE dropped 20% this morning- nice to know that sometimes the charts are right! But on negative side it dropped so quickly that i was only able to make 20,000 baht profit (id be at -18,000 baht now if i had not sold this morning at the open- so overall im pleased with this call).

What determines if you get paid dividends the X date or the book closing date.

I have one that is going down the tiolet, today is the book closing date. If I sell it today and I'm wrong I lose .15 dividend on 17000 shares.

XD date is the key- you need to have the stocks on that date to get the dividends

Set Finished at 913, so I was wrong

I sold the stocks I had been planning to sell.

Purchased three new one and accumulated on others.

Profit's now at 90,229

45K is in cash. So when I catch a drop I will accumulate again. I secured some heavy dividends for next month in the process.

So a good day for me even if lost a bit of profit for today.

Boy that is sweet maybe someday, congradulations

Actually Ray I think you will find at some point you are either the type of guy that wants to make 50% over two years because you focus on value or the guy who understands how to make 10% over 3 weeks because he understands price movements.

The two rarely mix. They tend two be very different disciplines.

I think your right I haven't really found my nitch yet. The problem right now, I really didn't have enough money to do this properly, At this stage I need to turn a baht where I can. Things will be much different in five years. I've built the portfolio to 350K so far. that isn't much in this world. But not bad for four months, considering how I started.

Right now this fills my time nicely which is a bonus. I wont be involved nearly as much after October. The wife and I will be on the bike a lot touring Thailand.

Hopefully next year will be different.

If it's OK from time to time I will ask question about charts. I may or may not be doing it correctly. I don't any way to find out of I'm doing correctly.

Abvak you got me thinking again. I currently trade in mid cap and low caps. In reading Graham, he defines value investing as to large cap stocks. I really don't have the funds for that yet.

Value investing here seems a little like fishing you may be trying to catch carp, so you go the place the carp hang out and cast your line, But you never really know whats on the line till you break the surface.

Sometimes you get what you are looking for and sometimes not. At the moment I only have one stock that I view a three to five years hold. For me to invest something like PTT I would be emptying a good portion of my savings account. To me that is risky business, also in the end I can get pretty confused.

Where I have an advantage is I have an excellent retirement. Not connected to stocks or bonds, for me anyway.

I'm now into my fifth month, so I read everything I can find. Check my watch list At least once daily.

I understand what your saying and I think your right. But, honestly I trying for the long run. But, getting the funds together to follow Grahams advice is at least a year down line.

Guys does anyone know who is being awarded thew contracts for the power grin from Lao to Bangkok?

Between that and the green energy, I think it's a safe bet that 1100 Klms will be added to the power grid, That is a lot of electric transformers and high voltage cable, and a huge labor contract.

Ray- for PTT, 2 of the charts indicate increase price today, 1 chart a decrease...

My PTT stocks went up 4% since buying them mid last week. Today, as you predicted lots of volume and climbing up fast. But could you let me know which charts you are using? Which websites, are providing good technical charts for the Thai stocks.

I know Bloomberg has them. But, these charts can't be used with candlesticks, no moving averages etc. So, they're not overly convenient for technical analysis, IMO. The charts on thaiset.com/stock/ are all from 2009, I can't find any up-to-date charts there. And somehow, I can't open the technical charts provided on the Phatra website.

So if you have any link to technical charts would be great.

Shaping up like another good day. hopefully my stocks will join them today. Since things are going as they are if they hit a 10% loss I'm holding. unless it's an exceptional buy, I'm not buying. In reading Graham I finally found the the definition if dollar averaging. It mean to put in the exact same amount of money each month come or shine. I think it would be effective if you use the 10% stop loss.

Markets start September with a bang; Dow up 255

Stocks start month with a big rally after signs of growth in US, Chinese manufacturing

Traders and specialists work the trading floor of the New York Stock Exchange after the start of trading, Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010, in New York. The Dow Jones industrial average jumped nearly 115 points in early morning trading. Broad indexes also rose more than 1 percent. (AP Photo/David Karp)

NEW YORK (AP) -- The fear that has been hanging over markets for most of August lifted on Wednesday. For how long remains anyone's guess.

The stock market started September with a jolt, turning sharply higher after a pair of encouraging reports on manufacturing sent investors seeking out riskier investments. Prices for the safest assets -- Treasurys, gold and the dollar -- all fell.

With investors suddenly willing to embrace risk, the Dow Jones industrial average added 255 points, its best day since July 7. All 30 stocks in the Dow closed higher. That marked a sharp break from August, when the market's most widely used index turned in its worst performance for the month in nine years.

Reports of stronger-than-expected manufacturing growth in China and the U.S snapped a run of discouraging data on the economy, including dismal readings on home sales and economic output. The Institute for Supply Management said manufacturing activity in the U.S. rose in August, in contrast to regional reports from recent weeks that pointed to a slowdown.

"It gives us hope that things may not be as bad as they seem," said Zahid Siddique, an associate portfolio manager at Gabelli Equity Trust Inc.

The Dow gained 254.75 points, or 2.5, percent to close at 10,269.47. Industrial stocks such as General Electric Co. and Caterpillar Inc. were among the Dow's biggest gainers.

Analysts cautioned that the gains, like many others the market has seen in recent weeks, could quickly pass. A bad surprise from the Labor Department's monthly report on employment, due out Friday, could investors back into hiding.

The good news on manufacturing "gives some comfort, but that is only good until the next number," said Darell Krasnoff, managing director at Bel Air Investment Advisors.

Even with its gains Wednesday, the Dow is still 989 points below its high this year of 11,258 reached on April 26. Nearly half of those losses, or 451 points, came in August as the market was bombarded with bad news on the economy.

Daniel Penrod, senior industry analyst at the California Credit Union League, said manufacturing reports have become increasingly important because they are a leading indicator for whether companies might start adding new jobs.

"If manufacturers ramp up ... it's going to require hiring," Penrod said. "Getting closer to that threshold (of hiring) is vital to the economy."

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 30.96, or 3 percent, to 1,080.29. The S&P 500 lost 4.7 percent in August, its worst showing for the month since 2001, when the dot-com bubble was imploding. The Nasdaq gained 62.81, or 3 percent, to 2,176.84.

About six stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to 4.5 billion shares.

Safety assets fell broadly. Gold slipped $2.20 to settle at $1,248.10 an ounce. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note, which moves opposite its price, rose to 2.58 percent from 2.47 percent late Tuesday. The yield on government debt anchors borrowing rates for a wide variety of consumer and business loans.

In corporate news, Burger King Holdings Inc. jumped $2.41, or 14.7 percent, to $18.86 on reports it could be taken private. Apple Inc. shares rose $7.23, or 3 percent, to $250.33 after CEO Steve Jobs announced a new line of iPods.

GE rose 53 cents, or 3.7 percent, to $15.01. Eaton Corp. climbed $5.38, or 7.7 percent, to $74.86.

AP Business Writer Matthew Craft contributed to this story.

(This version CORRECTS 14th paragraph to note yield rose to 2.58 percent)

I use bloomberg chart lines and just go by the trend e.g. if all three charts are moving upwards that would be a buy signal for me. I dont use the candle analysis.

My understanding is the electronics sector has slowed. When can we expect an improvement, Got some good companies in mind. But, I don't think now is the time.

STOCK INVESTMENT

SET Index returns to pre-1997 level

By The Nation

The Stock Exchange of Thailand Index today hit a new 14-year high, with the closing at 929.90 points thanks mainly to the end of Map Ta Phut crisis.

The market gained 1.02 per cent from yesterday, on brisk turnover of Bt55 billion.

Driving the index above the level unseen since 1997 financial crisis were heavy-weight energy stocks. Being the top active, PTT today advanced Bt22 or 8.18 per cent to Bt291 while Siam Cement rose Bt10 or 3.30 per cent to Bt313.

Ok a two part question, In reading I have found that there is a way to narrow a search by adding factors your looking for. But,as all these books are they are referring to America.

Does the SET have something similar?

Does anyone know of a list of approved companies in the Map Ta Put ( sorry can't remember ) the name project?

It is true the god look after fools and drunks I don't drink.

A discussion w brought up Thaistocks about a particular company, There wasn't a lot of enthusiasm about it. I researched it found it was a solid company and paid great dividends.

I bought it as long term hold and enjoy the dividends. I didn't know it but it was part of that project it shot up 27% in an hour after the court verdict and it was approved. Very inexpensive stock we are talking small caps.

So I'm wondering if there might be some more little nuggets to be found out there.
