Court denies bail for Australian red-shirt supporter

Australian who is detained for breaking emergency law during the red shirts protests claimed on Friday that he was beaten while being in jail.

Conor David Purcell on Friday was taken to a court and his lawyer has applied for bail.

"Seven armed people beat the crap out of me in jail so that they could move me to maximum security," he said.

According to ABC, an Australia news agency, Purcell, 30, an Irish Australian appeared agitated and shouted to waiting journalists that he was being held in a cell with 31 others.

He was arrested for allegedly breaking the emergency laws imposed in Bangkok and surrounding provinces in May. He was a regular speaker in the red shirts protests.

The court told him police need more time to prepare their case therefore his detention would be extended until Thursday.

However his lawyer says if a bail application is granted, a $7,000 surety will be paid by people within the red shirt movement.

22 workers hospitalised after chemical leak in Chonburi industrial estate

CHONBURI (TNA) -- Twenty workers were hospitalised Friday due to chemical inhalation after a chemical leak in the Amata Nakorn Industrial Estate in Thailand's eastern province of Chonburi.

The chemical leak occurred at Siam Keeper Mfg, a producer of O-rings and oil seals in the Amata Nakhon Industrial Estate.

Chonburi senior medical official Marut Jirasetsiri said their conditions were not severe and according to the initial inspection, an industrial fan malfunctioned, causing the chemical to evaporate into the factory atmosphere forming a haze within the building.

The chemicals that caused irritation to respiratory system are believed to be xylene, ethanol and methyl ethyl ketone, he said.

The plant was ordered closed temporarily for safety reasons.

About 100 workers were working at the time and evacuated the factory when the chemicals leaked. The area was cordoned off.

Chonburi governor Seni Jittakasem inspected the site and ordered officials to speed up investigation and find the cause of the chemical leak.

Witoon Simachokedee, Permanent Secretary for Industry said that the initial investigation showed that chemical leak may be related to human error.

As xylene can affect the conjunctiva and nostrils, the ministry ordered a machinery shutdown until the investigators determine the cause of the accident and safety is ensured.

Democrats authorise PM to finalise Cabinet reshuffle

By The Nation

The meeting of Democrat executives and MPs on Friday resolved to authorise Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to make a final decision on the Cabinet line-up.

Deputy Prime Minister Trairong Suwankhiri said the party instructed the prime minister to review the allocation of three Cabinet seats which became a most contentious issue.

The party's meeting was inconclusive about the list of outgoing ministers although the Democrats had no apprarent disagreement on incoming ministers.

The party's executive board earlier recommended for incoming ministers to include Nipit Intharasombat, Juti Kririrk, Ong-art Klampaiboon and Chalermchai Sri-on.

Deputy Education Minister Chaiwut Bannawat is tipped for the position of Information and Communication Technology minister.

The outgoing ministers include Colture Minister Teera Slukpetch, Science Minister Khunying Kalaya Sophonpanich, Labour Minister Phaithoon Kaeothong and PM's Office Minister Sathit Wongnongtaey.

Speculation has spreaded the party could not form a consensus on the shuffling of Sathit, Phaithoon and Kalaya.
