Thai Nutritional Labels Blocking My View

I went down to Tops to do some Grocery shopping today, and being the type of person I am I could spend a good hour or two just browsing through whats available. This includes looking at the nutrition bars of products (Protein, Fat, etc).

Unfortunately for all of us who can't read Thai, most of this is in Thai or non existent.

Never mind, I'll just look at imported items for some reading material. Whats this? Theres a huge sticker filled with Thai nutrition again.

I know we live in Thailand, but this just annoys me sometimes. My solution? Finally going to Asia Books and finding a book on how to read Thai.

Anyone else sometimes annoyed by this? Or am I the only crazy one here?

I hate to admit it, but I just take those labels off.

The Thai label won't always have nutritional info, just a list of ingredients and maybe instructions, so even learning to read doesn't help as the information only exists in English under the Thai label.

Most of the time, Thai nutrition labels actually cover the English nutrition labels, which annoys me to no end - so I will peel it back as much as necessary right there in the store.

And most Thai products are loaded with sugar, its hard to find healthy choices at the supermarket here and not being able to read the product contents makes it even harder.

Yes, it is those little things in life that piss you off. I find myself picking up one after the other, only to find the clever buggers have not just covered the information you seek, they have strategically placed them in the same place on every jar, tin or packet of the stuff! Now that takes discipline!

I smile and tell myself that the world has much bigger problems than this to deal with. So, I just learnt to live with it, as part of the tough life one leads living in the tropics.

I understand the need to have information in the local language.

Sometimes product labels don't provide any open spaces, and so must get covered someplace.

But it just seems these label-buggers are going out of their way to piss on us. I've seen products with labels that are not the wrap-around type - so there is plenty of empty space to put the Thai label on the jar or plastic bottle, while leaving the original label open for reading. But guess what, the label-buggers cover up the English anyway.

Then again it could just be stupidity. Sorry, but that comment comes from experience from my own business... a certain small shop in a small town that we no longer do business with, so its no problem to talk about it. Some of you may be familiar our current label style - front & back, with open space in between each (for viewing texture), as well as a small amount of room above the label (enough for a price sticker). We found these schmucks were putting their pricing stickers directly over our name/logo, or the flavor, etc. Anywhere but in the open areas. Nice, eh?

knowing this world of litigation as i do (thanks to our American Cousins) there may be an actual requirement to paste it on top of where the same non thai information is.

As I said, it takes discipline to put them all on by hand in the same place. Someone was shown/told how to do that, and where to put it.

But like I said. If that was my biggest problem with life in the Kingdom, I wouldn't be whingin'
