More on my original post, The immigration policeman who was the only one who spoke english came down to translate for us, he said that the reason for the crackdown was that a European had crossed the border a couple of days before in a group of 10 on a visa run from Pattaya and was found with 20 cartons.

I didn't hear what happened to him and what penalty he received.

Why do they have to take the risk? Is there any black market in Thailand selling cigarette?

I doubt it.

If he was carrying Fortuna Lites from the "Phils" in... maybe 200b, tops, Marlbro Lites, 100b tops. per ctn........ hardly worth the risk.

Thailand Marlboro's and other cigs are crap quality like anything else made in this country. I don't blame anyone for wishing to import stuff here cause everything is made better elsewhere; however, it should be done within legal limits

I thought they were 'manufactured' in Philippines and/or Malaysia. From my limited observations, they all appear to have "import duty" seals on the packs.

:o

I understand, from what a Distributor once told me, that Marlboro are all now made under licence at various locations throughout the Far East. So if you buy in London or New York they are still imports. :D

Canada

1 pack of ciggies (20's) - $10.00 (320+ baht) regular price (varies across the country) (almost 50 cents per ciggie !)

1 carton (10 packs-20's) - $90.00+ (2,900+ baht) (at some stores)

(in Canada, taxes on cigarettes can add up to more than 50% of the total price)

Afghanistan

1 pack (20's) - $0.25 US (10 baht ?) (just over a penny per ciggie !)

1 carton (10 packs) - $2.50 US (100 baht) !

(most cigarettes are "knock-offs" of popular brands, smuggled in from Pakistan)

At those prices, who can afford to quit ! It'll be quite the shocker if I ever go home !

Anybody here know of where to get decent European brands of cigarette like Regal, Embassy, Lambert and Butler, B&H Richmonds etc. The 7 / 11 only seems to stock the 'usual suspects' like the US and thai brands. Let me tell you I can smoke Malboros but they don't rate the same as the European brands mentioned.

Are the Tesco stores any good for that?

or maybe it was this guy thats caused the scramble

I am currently a little bemused with the customs here in thailand. I returned from the phils yesterday with my usuall 50 cartons of cigarretes of malbrough lights...... they take me with 4 men no uniforms in a car around to atm machines until i cannot draw any more out, they wanted over 200,000 but i could not get so they took 149,625, this was out rageous in my eyes, i have brought cigs before and they have never said anything. so a small fine would of been enough for me to realise not to do again. Now i know this must be a right long shot but is there anyway i can get any kind of money back, i am going back to england monday and all i have is a silly receipt...
