3.7 quake recorded

By The Nation

KANCHANABURI An earthquake rattled Kanchanaburi yesterday afternoon, after tsunami fears caused panic among villagers and sea gypsies along the Andaman Coast in Phang Nga late on Saturday night.

The quake in Sri Sawas district measured 3.7 on the Richter scale. It was reported at 3.19pm, with the strongest tremor felt in Tambon Dan Mae Chalaeb.

Officials at Sri Nakharin Dam, located about 30 kilometres away from the epicentre, said the seismic activity did not cause damage or any structural change.

A live video feed of the dam's condition was available at cctvsnr.egat.com for checking, they said.

At 10.30pm on Saturday night, more than 100 Thais and Moken sea gypsies fled from their homes after a warning from unknown sources. They moved inland to the 778km marker on Phetkasem Rd.

A 7.5-Richter-scale quake was reported off the Nicobar Islands north of Sumatra and a quake off Japan several hours before that.

A villager said he got a phone call about a possible quake and a warning from a CP company that raises shrimp in the vicinity. Another villager saw a message running during a World Cup match.

Did any Buffalo get hurt? Just so we can be prepared to go to Western Union soon.... :)

Not sure if you are trying to be funny or what? It was only a few years ago that hundreds of thousands of people died due to one of these, several thousands of which in Thailand.

One approved by the government ??

Sure.

You cannot gamble unless the deal is the government.

I know this sound ironic, however the government has done this to protect us citizen from being cheated by illegal dealers.

Is it true? I heard that there are betting dealers in almost every street in Europe. More casino than 7-11.

Is it true? That you can buy lottery tickets in supermarket and local convenience stores?

If my English friend is telling the truth, European must be the most addicted people in the world. Far worst than Thai.

It was kind of funny. A 3.7 isn't going to do much of anything, you can't probably even feel it, unless you were laying on the floor, at the epicenter. Have you ever felt a real earthquake, like a 7? On land that will do damage. The quake that caused the tsunami was a 9, one of the strongest quakes in history. The 1906 quake that destroyed San Francisco was an 8. There have been two quakes in the past few days that were 7 and 7.5 off the coast in the Adamin Sea. So, calm down. Or read this if you want to freak out, these are called significant earthquakes... A 3. anything is not significant. I've lived with them all my life, including deadly ones... For more information please refer to: Earthquake Hazards Program: Recent Earthquakes - Last 8-30 Days

You really do need to get out more often and understand Europe's or the West's problems are not Thailand's.

Unlike Thailand, Europe and the rest of the more developed world have governments that will try to enact policies to solve their problems, act on behalf of the populous and win or fail at the ballot box.

Thailand bans casinos and yet a massive percentage of the population gambles be it in a lottery or illegaly. Gambling per se is not the issue, irresponsible gambling is the issue. I don't see the governments efforts stopping that. Of course could you imagine the revelation in Thai society if they discovered that many forms of gambling rely on skill instead of a bolt of lightening of luck. Of course, an unintended consequence of that could bring the Buddhist faith falling down around everyone.

Strewth, the country only just woke up to understand the power of the vote, imagine if they stopped believing in luck? That would be the last removal of the vestiges of belief in pre-ordered fate in Thai society. Then see the societal uproar.

Ironically, we don't have many 7-11 (and considerably fewer casino's)in Europe because we tend to walk about 15 times more distance per day than Thai's. Maybe the Thai government should restrict 7-11 concentration to encourage the people to walk and exercise more. Now that would probably be a more beneficial policy.

How did the topic of earthquakes get derailed to gambling? I think that's on another thread...cool.gif
