Soccer Gambler Nabbed Mugging Woman

Bang Sue police have arrested a post worker for mugging a clothes vendor to pay off debts he incurred from gambling on the World Cup.

Bang Sue police hauled off 30-year-old Sornkrai Boonsaenkom, after apprehending him for mugging Aree Wanpradit.

Sornkrai allegedly attacked Aree, a clothes vendor at a market behind the Finance Ministry, yesterday by snatching her purse.

The woman, however, resisted and a scuffle ensued. Sornkrai then drew his knife, but passers-by rushed to Aree's aid and held Sornkrai until police arrived.

Initial questioning of Sornkrai revealed that he is a Samsen post office worker.

He claimed he was driven to the crime after incurring a debt of 2,000 baht over gambling on a World Cup soccer match.

He also claimed yesterday's mugging was his first crime but admitted to being an avid soccer gambler.

Sornkrai was charged with robbery using a motor vehicle and is facing up to 20 years in prison as well as a 40,000-baht fine.

Metropolitan Police: Ill-intentioned group still active

BANGKOK (NNT) -- The Metropolitan Police Bureau believes that ill-intentioned people are still active in Bangkok and ready to instigate unrest in the society.

Metropolitan Police Chief, Police Lieutenant General Santhan Chayanont, said many unrest incidents were found continuously, such as the recent attack at an empty army oil depot in Nonthaburi and the explosion in front of the head office of the coalition Bhumjaithai party.

Police Lieutenant General Santhan hence believed that underground movements of those ill-intentioned people were still going at full force. To prevent further unrest, the police would convene a meeting to adopt security measures in taking care of many important places in Bangkok, including the Metropolitan Electricity Authority, gas stations, residences of key figures, and others.

The metropolitan police chief added that the number of police deployed would be discussed during the conference in order to find out whether it was adequate to take care of the situation. If not, the metropolitan police would ask for reinforcements from other units.

Cabinet extends measures to help low-income earners

BANGKOK (TNA) -- Thailand’s Cabinet on Tuesday extended measures to lower the cost of living for low-income earners for another six months while pegging prices of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and natural gas vehicle (NGV) fuels beginning in September.

The economic assistance measures include free electricity for households using less than 90 units per month, free transportation on 800 public buses on Bangkok’s 73 routes, and free passage on 172 lines of third-class railway trains on a daily basis.

As the subsidy programme in public utilities expires tomorrow, June 30, the Cabinet moved to extend the measures through the end of December.

Meanwhile, the Cabinet also approved freezing prices of LPG and NGV gas fuels as proposed by the Energy Policy and Planning Committee.

The Cabinet agreed to peg the price of NGV gas at Bt8.5 per kilogramme and the price of LPG gas at Bt18.13 kg for six months, beginning in September this year through February 2011.

In addition, the Cabinet assigned the finance ministry to research possibilities to provide the long-term or permanent economic assistance measures to reduce cost-of-living expenses for low-income earners, instead of revising and extending the programme every three months.

The ministry will consider which forms of assistance will be suitable and will not affect Thailand's state enterprises.

In other developments, the agriculture and commerce ministries and some other officials were instructed to jointly resolve the problem of high cost of hen eggs, and review the status of poultry producers and management to reduce egg prices without negatively impacting farmers. (TNA)

Court Turns down Bail Request for Jailed Red-shirt Leaders

The Criminal Court has once again turned down red-shirt lawyer Karom Poltaklang's request for bail for the 11 detained red-shirt leaders. The court reasoned that the punishment for their charges are severe so there is a high possibility of them fleeing the court process.
