World’s first wedding for rare pygmy cows

SA KAEO: -- The world’s first wedding ceremony for pygmy cows is to be conducted in the eastern province of Sa Kaeo following the discovery of two of the rare dwarf Brahman cows by local farmers.

Visitors to the Sa Kaeo Cattle Market were today astonished by the sight of an 18 month-old Brahman cow, which, at 70 centimetres high and weighing only 50 kilograms, was the size of an average dog.

Mr. Amphol Wangboon, the owner of ‘Thong Khow’, said that normally an 18 month-old cow would be two metres tall and would weigh around one tonne.

News of the pygmy cow spread fast, and by noon, Mr. Krajang Kanokprasert, a farmer from the nearby province of Prachinburi, had travelled to Sa Kaeo with his own dwarf bull.

Excitedly hugging ‘Thong Khow’ (White Gold), the owner of ‘Thong Kham’ (Black Gold) asked Mr. Amphol if he could purchase the young cow, only to be rebuffed.

But after an hour of negotiations, the two farmers agreed for their cows to be ‘married’, and announced their ‘engagement’ to the cattle farmers gathered at the market.

The ‘wedding’ ceremony, for which Mr. Krajang has paid Bt100,000, will take place on 10 July at the cattle market, and will be as lavish as any human wedding.

The dowry for the cow will be a truck full of fresh grass, a truck full of hay and a truck full of maize. Present at the ceremony will be the Sa Kaeo district chief and the province’s chief livestock officer, who will ‘register’ the cows’ marriage.
