Over the last few days, I've been visiting a sick Danish friend in Vachira Hospital, Phuket Town. In the next bed to the friend of mine, is another ill 'farang'. Previously during my visits, the 'neighbour' hasn't been conscious, so no communication taken place.

Today however, I've learnt that he's CHRIS BERRY, a New Zealander, apparently a long term resident of Phuket, and had been living with a friend in Rawai, Phuket. The hospital staff also told me that he was previously married to a Thai lady, but now divorced. I'm guessing that the guy is in his late 70's or so, and is seriously ill. Nobody appears to visit him or take care of him (for those who understand Vachira Hospital, you will know exactly what I mean).

Does anyone know of this guy, his background or family etc? Before learning he was a Kiwi, I actually contacted the British Consul. If anyone has information or can provide background, please PM me and I'll ensure that it's passed to the hospital staff, as I know they are keen that his NOK are informed of his situation.

I do not know him but have copied this to someone I know in the NZ embassy in Bangkok.

Yes it is Chris B. he has been ill for some time. He needs help but doesn’t want any. He has a Chalong Police cop looking after him. He is penniless but I think we should help him. I don't think he is that old, maybe 65. The cop contacted the NZ Embassy but they said they could only help if he was dead. Come on NZ.

I wish him well.

I can take out the battery out of my hearing aid - I have heard it all now.

The embassy has informed his niece & apparently Chris is very particular as to who he has contact with. I will post if I learn more.

good on you guys for trying to help this man

i was going to grab a few kiwi mates today and go visit or at least see what could be done for him

i could think of nothing worse than lying , sick, in any hospital, let alone in a foreign one without any support.

however. no matter how good our intentios..it is imperative to respect the wishes of the man

i hope his lot improves for him soon.

Hopefully, the questions being asked from different individuals about Chris's welfare, will spur the NZ Embassy to go the extra mile on this one. Meanwhile, my Danish buddy's daughter is now in Phuket, and spending every day at Vachira taking care of her dad. We're also taking enough drinks and food into the hospital for Chris also.

An update. This afternoon I was c.c.'d on an email from the British Consul (Phuket) to his colleagues in BKK, passing the information for them to liaise with their NZ counterparts.

Such a sad story, buy you have to respect his wishes, and a thai police friend helping to take care too.At least a few are able to go round and take things to him,not alot more to do.At some stage we all run out of time, and to have someone or some people to care, you cant ask much more.

Nothing helpful here, I just want y'all to know that this is such a nice thread! :)

thanks ladyinred on behalf of all ...buts its just part of 'do unto others as you would hope others do unto you' in my books'

sadly though most people only practice ''whats in it for me '' these days

An update.

I wasn't there at the time, but my Danish buddy's daughter tells me that Chris was visited this afternoon by his nephew, who'd arrived from NZ.
