Settling In?

Featured Replies

When teaching in Thailand, is it at all possible to settle in one area?

Most of the threads I've read seem to hint at 1 year contracts, then you're on the move again but, I'm never sure whether the moving around is instigated by the teachers, or the schools (assuming, of course, that you're worth your weight and can spell you own name!).

Is it actually possible to establish yourself in one position and stick with it indefinitely, if that's what you want to do?

In a word....yes of course it is possible. Although a lot of teachers change jobs frequently due to the school messin' them about.

Of course it is.

It is true that most of the schools offer 1 year contracts but if at the end of the contract both parties are happy then a new contract will be offered.

Most schools have difficulties retaining teachers. Wherever I've worked in 90% of the cases when someone moves on it is the teacher's decision and not the schools.

I've worked full time in two schools 2 years at the first and now over just over two years with my second employer with no plans to break away.

The first job I took was the right job at the right time for me. I was qualified but had no experience which my employer gave me in abundance(children, in house adult classes and corporate classes).

After trying most things I decided that for me the way forward was corporate teaching which I now do almost exclusively.

Thanks Wanraya, that was an inspiration to read because that's just where I am now. I've just completed the tefl, have a BA(Hons) but, alas, no classroom experience. Your first job sounds just like what I need to find, but I'd kind of like to settle.

Thanks again.
