Govt warning over increased use of ‘date rape’ drugs

BANGKOK: -- The Medical Services Department yesterday warned that controlled substances were being used to drug women and make them prey to sexual abuse.

“Such drugs affect the minds of those who take them. Under their influence, women can’t control themselves and are not aware of what they are doing,” said the department’s director-general, Dr Chatri Banchuin.

He added that such drugs included Midazolam, which is used in the medical profession to make patients drowsy or to quell anxiety prior to surgery or certain procedures.

The drug is also used in intensive care units both to relieve the stress of being in the unit and ease patients’ response to respiratory machines.

By law, Midazolam is a controlled substance to be administered only by or under the immediate supervision of a doctor knowledgeable in its use.

However, Chatri said that abuse of Midazolam had become so widespread in the country’s nightlife that it has been nicknamed the “virginity-losing” or “stripping” drug. Assistant department director-general Dr Boonruang Trairuangworawat said Midazolam-takers would not register a positive response on test kits used for methamphetamine and ecstasy pills.

“We have a separate kit to nail down those who have taken such drugs, but this kit is more expensive,” he said.

He added that his department was now paying closer attention to Midazolam, which has proven popular among well-heeled sexual abusers.

He said another controlled drug, Alprazolam, had also been put on the watch list because of reports of its widespread abuse among the nightlife crowd.

Alprazolam is normally used to treat anxiety disorders and panic attacks.

However, nightlife revellers have reportedly begun taking it, saying it makes them bolder and more able to enjoy themselves.

Boonruang said his department would also train caretakers at apartments and dormitories to watch out for possible drug abuse.

“The abuse of drugs at apartments and dormitories is increasing,” he said.

I think that was called Rohypol.

These other drugs are also used to spike drinks.

Gamma Hydroxybutynate, Katamine Hydrochloride.

There are usually no traces of the drug within the victim`s body after 72 hours.

Midazolam is better known by the brand name of Dormicum. It was available over the counter as a powerful sleeping pill until these scare stories of abuse surfaced a few years ago and the medical authorities reacted by banning it.

Same with alprazolam, ketamine (horse tranquiliser), codeine and diazepam (it's a long list).

Although it's now a controlled substance, the crims still seem to be getting hold of it without too much trouble, if what the good doctor says is true.

Something of the sort happened to a friend about 3-4 weeks ago at the VIP complex in lak si . She had to be taken to hospital later in the evening . It happened at a table of 10 people ( 6 women , 4 men ) with the drinks attendant hovering - nobody noticed a thing.

Often these actions--like drugging have more to do with controlling people than actually needing sex. Of course, it's not that hard to get sex here--especially in the nightclub scene. Some people like having that kind of power and control over another person.

Being drugged here in Thailand is quite common. I know a lot of people who have had this happen--mostly for the purpose of robbery.
