Penang has been rather fickle for the last year or so and different people seem to have different experiences. It would not be my choice for any visa currently but used to be excellent. It is a Consulate in the city of Georgetown so plenty of hotel/guest house options (Consulate is in suburb so most people use taxi or a visa service). You do not need a visa and Thai can obtain 30 days on passport entry. You would always have the option to proceed to KL from there if a problem getting visa you want and time not an overriding factor.

Georgetown is on Penang (the only city). Penang is the island. It is connected to the mainland by a bridge (south of Georgetown) or ferry service to the center of Georgetown port from Butterworth bus/train station. The Consulate is about a 10-20 minute drive from port area.

There is transport from airport into town and likely about a 30 minute ride (it is near the bridge). Chula is a well known back packers street in center of the old town area of the city and center for those getting visas. Most of city is an easy walk from there but if going to Consulate I would take taxi as it off main road a bit and really too far to walk from Chula for most people.

Do not believe baht is accepted but could be wrong as have not been there for many years. You should be able to change easily at airport. Believe there is both taxi and bus options but do not know the price but as I recall taxi prices were not much different than Thailand (but no meter use) so should not be too much. They should advise price prior to travel. But believe bus travel is very cheap and good service if you are comfortable with baggage on bus.

Just got an ED Visa from Penang.

Booked my return flight at Air Asia office at Khao San for 4970 Baht.

Went to Penang on 13th of July and took a taxi to George Town, 42 MYR. Went to Lebuh Chulia to Banana-Guesthouse and Visa service. They have already three offices in that area, so you want miss them. I arrived at 17:30h local time. I hand over my passport, two passport photos and the documents as providet by my school. I paid 2200 Baht for the Visa and 260 Baht for the service. As they told me to bring my passport to the ambassy on Wendsday, I came to pick up it Thursday and everything worked out so far. Coming back on Saturday to BKK (all flights full on Thursday and Friday) I didn't have any problems to get a 90 day stamp at BKK Survanabum Airport.

To Penang International Airport I went by public bus (No. 405, 2,70 MYR, one hour ride). Very cheap, but it takes some time.

Stayed in a hotel at the end of Lebuh Chulia for 49 MYR a night, called KK Budget Hotel. It is No. 26 Lebuh Chulia, [email protected], Tel 604-2623202. It's the Indian part of the street.

Do not change too much money at the airport!!!
