Trevor Lund serving 25-year term for drug offences

Bangkok, Thailand (UW) - Trevor Lund, a prisoner serving 25 years in Thailand for drug offences, has been accepted as an official entrant in Sunday's Bangkok Marathon even though he cannot run the official course.

Lund will run 124 laps - 26 miles - around the running trackat Klong Prem prison while other participants trek through Bangkok streets. The 38-year-old man is now in the eighth year of his sentence for unspecified drug convictions.

He hopes his marathon will attract charitable donations for the poor. "We have a dedicated bank account set up, it is been controlled by a member of the diplomatic connunity," Lund says.

The prison, on the outskirts of Bangkok, houses nearly 7,000 inmates.

More than 20,000 runners are expected to participate in the marathon, which starts tomorrow at the unusual time of 3.30 a.m. on Sanamchai Road next to the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.
