<deleted>!!?? - I just bought one for home last week after procrastinating for a year, and now you guys are telling me you have em in your car. This is awesome. You have it hooked up to the existing Alpine screen ... or?? Where do you keep the actual unit?

This eliminates the need for ipod and usb interface then. I'm keen to know more.

I now have 4 of them :)

For the Pajero Sport I'm using the WDTV HD v2 (non-ethernet model) - it's installed hidden in the dash behind the LCD touchscreen, with the IR remote receiver installed in the left-side junction of the windscreen and the dash. The IR remote works perfectly regardless of where it's pointed.

I've connected the video-out the "TV input" of the LCD screen, and used a KCA-121B AUX-in adaptor for the audio side of things. I used some USB cables from an old desktop PC case to extend and relocate the USB ports to a blank panel under the OEM stereo for ease of plugging-in HDD's and USB sticks. I use a 1TB 2.5" HDD for the primary source (powered via USB) which has my entire audio collection encoded using FLAC, plus another ~40 Blu-ray rips, and use the 2nd USB port for newer content and stuff that friends bring along.

The cool thing about the WDTV is that it's native 12VDC, so can run straight off the vehicles accessory power without needing a 12VDC-220VAC inverter. The other plus is that the kids use it every day at home, so have no problems using it in the car.. (I have a flip-down 11" roof-mount screen for the kids)

Pictures would probably work better - I'll try to find some time to pull the dash apart and snap some pics later this week..

Better late than never :)

Sorry for the low quality - my phone doesn't have a flash :(

Relocated remote control sensor (look closely at the corner where the windscreen, dash and a-Pillar meet)

WDTV installed behind the factory LCD. Note the hi-tech sound deadening used ;)

Shot showing the remote eye extension mod.. I used an old USB cable for this.

Remote eye extension cable running behind the glovebox. From here I pulled the door seal rubber and passenger A-Pillar off to route the cable up to the dash/windscreen junction.

In operation.. Excuse the Justin Beiber clip - I have kids ;)

Thats awesome MRO. I;ll have to look up about the remote sensor thingy ...

I'm gonna have to get over to the showroom soon and have a look at options for placing the HD and usb slots. When the time comes I wont be doing such a setup myself, I;ll leave it to the professionals. I've used Chom audio before but on a new car might be better to spend a bit more and go with Amnuay (in Chiang Mai).

.... oh, and this thread with pics will be a good guide for them. Thx muchly.

There's a bit of finicky soldering iron work involved to remove the remote sensor and solder-in the extension cable, so make sure whoever does it isn't going to destroy your shiny new, and now warranty-less WDTV :)

If you're in Chiangmai I'd suggest giving Khuangsingha a look-in too - they seem to be right into doing custom work (judging by their representation in IASCA competition that is): http://www.khuangsingha.com/

Very nice installation there MRO

Here you go then :)

It's a Zulex ZL110A 11" (480p widescreen)

That is strictly a monitor yes? No built in DVD player? I guess you can view DVDs on it that are playing in the stock Alpine head unit right?

In my usage it's purely a monitor, but the LCD does have a TV Tuner in it as well, but would require one of those "rabbit ear" antennas for reception. I'm not bothered with it seeing as I have roughly 4-5 weeks of 720P and 1080P HD video content on the 1TB drive that's connected to the WDTV ;)

Yes, the OEM Alpine stereo plays DVD's and VCD's (also through the screen).

Edit: If you're interested in the screen, here's the number for the vendor I bought mine from: 0864064930. Note that he doesn't speak any English whatsoever, and can't communicate via email, but he does have the absolute best prices around... Most shops around here are asking 7,000-15,000 Baht for an 11" roof screen - I got mine for 3,700 Baht including 2-day delivery by EMS ;)

nice price...

I have to admit I have a (very quiet) chuckle when I see people base a 1M+ Baht buying decision on the grounds of a < 4K Baht accessory..

There's no substitute for knowledge.

I already have a flip down screen with built-in DVD player.......paid a whole lot more that 3000 baht. The next time I buy a car I'm going to check with MRO before I add ANYTHING to it......he knows where all the great stuff is at for the best price too

I too have the WDTV plumbed in to the alpine system, but only use it for Music concerts tho or the odd movie, as it is a pain in the ar..se using it`s remote control to skip tracks etc while driving.

It kind of defeats the purpose of doing the SWR (steering wheel mod..which i have also done) as with the SWR and the wdtv ,all you can control is the sound volume with the steering wheel...

Also mentioned by MRO is the other issue of keeping your hd spinning, and as you know the system resets when going from ACC to start the engine....2 options i`m looking into to cure that , is

1. do the same as MRO and fit a delay timer...this one fits the bill..... www.acdcind.com/mzl10.php

or

2. looking into fitting a standard 12volt relay, that enables power from the battery to the acc circuit triggered as you turn the ignition key and then drops out the relay as you let go the key...thus maintaining a constant power to the ACC circuit, which will address the two points, the hd and the WDTV will keep running, and that pain of all pains having to restart the monitor every time you go from ACC to start....

I preffer option 2 if it works, it`s cheap and i dont like the idea of the delay timer holding on power or 15 mins after i leave the car and forget to stop the WDTV......

Oh and for you guys thinking of going the WDTV route, there is a nice minimilistic firmware for the standard WDTV (not the live version) with large easy to read menus for that small 7" screen....have a look here ........ http://wdtv.free.fr/

This one again is for MRO , people who have done the same,

as above i want to fit a relay into the system to hold power on the screen and WDTV,,,,,i found the cranking wire at the steering column (red/black...12volt while cranking)...thing is to test if it might work, i ran a temp wire to the acc at the screen from the battery and the screen and h/u still cut off while cranking....so MRO with the delay timer you say you fitted, did you only include this for the wdtv ? or AND the h/u and sreen, if so what colour wire did you use at the h/u or screen as mentioned the normall acc wire wont do..???

I'm not sure how you'll manage it with just a relay, as all ACC power is disconnected while cranking the engine - unless you're better than me :) I messed around with an electrolytic cap, bleed resistor and relay for a few minutes before deciding to bin the idea and just use a solid-state timer instead. I have not wired my timer to keep the DVD player and LCD alive, but that's a really good idea - I'll have to revisit it when I get a moment ;P

The car is not here ATM so I can't check anything, but the norm for Alpine units is Yellow for ACC (blue may seem the same but it's actually the remote turn-on for external amps/processors). Probably best to confirm this with a multimeter or test light before committing in though..

Edit: Red is normally constant 12v on Alpine gear as well, so no need to source this from battery or ignition.

MRO to divert slightly please can you let me know the following, i am fed up with loading discs into my Alpine unit for music only. Was looking at the Apple website and they have a I-Pod classic 160GB for 10,200 Baht. Is it possible to connect this to the Alpine DVA-9861E.

Also, don't forget you can fit roughly 500-1000 MP3's on a DVD blank (depending on bitrate used)..

I'm finally going for a test drive today. Anyone have any tips for negotiating a good deal??

The current promotion is 1.69% interest for 25% down with 48 months repayments, with free 1-year insurance and reversing camera (GT model only). This promotion is meant to end on August 31st, but no doubt it'll continue next month in a slightly revised way..

Standard freebies you can expect are:

  • Rear spoiler for 2WD model (already included on the 4WD)
  • Window tint (make sure you specify the brand you want or you'll end up with the cheapest grade)
  • Weather shields
  • Floor mats
  • Free Tabien Rot (registration / road tax) - this has gone from being a standard inclusion with all cars to being something you have to negotiate into the deal.

Additional freebies you can usually negotiate into the deal (usually only one, but try your luck ;) ):

  • GPS navigation (make sure it's the Alpine PMD-B100E, not the PND-B80E)
  • 5pc Body skirt package (Genuine OEM is worth 28K Baht, aftermarket it can be had for ~8000 Baht)

Also note that even with the low interest campaign in place, interest is still negotiable. Some dealers have gone as alow as 1.1% but 1.35% seems achievable at most dealerships with enough haggling.

I went to 2 dealers here in Chiang Mai. Both match each other on the basic package:

Insurance

Rego

Film - maxima; 3M is 2.5k more

Rear camera

weather shields

chrome handle thingo's

carpet mats

cover

3k petrol coupons

side mirror covers - LED?

side kickers

license plate cover

Super Highway branch offered rear skirt and spoiler - but that seemed to be really pushing it. Problem here though, is that one that was fitted in the yard was off-colour; I could hardly notice, but would this indicate poor service / attention to detail??

Meechock branch said they could do a spoiler or the skirt but not both. Boss came over and gave a spiel about a family run business.

Both branches made out that they were giving away alot - I'd like to know how one gets the GPS and / or skirt package.

Overall - still undecided. Anyone have any experience with Mitsubishi C.Mai??

Most pre-painted parts are off-shade a little - there's usually at least 4 or more different shades of a given paint color, so the chances of getting an absolute match with a pre-painted part is just the luck of the draw. You can always take it to a body shop for color-matching I guess, which I will be doing soon (I've been holding off for a little stone chip damage first so I can kill two birds hehe ;) )

As for the two different dealers, one factor you should also consider is whether they both have the vehicle/color you want in-stock. If not you might just be cutting a deal that makes you wait another month for the car..

You're getting a few freebies in the deal which are expensive as genuine parts, but quite cheap as aftermarket accessories - notably the door handles recess covers, the car cover, and the stainless door sill covers. Perhaps by removing these from the deal you'll be able to negotiate in the GPS? Maybe worth a try..

Bottom line is that there's ~70,000 Baht of discount room in the car.. ~35K of that is used up in the reduced interest promotion, so that leaves another 35k max they can do as freebies - the key is to push for inclusions that you can't buy significantly cheaper yourself I guess..
