I heard that there is some service provided by a company in Thailand that allows you to make a cash payment at their office and they take a small commission. Doing things this way allows somebody to buy the discounted ticket at the internet rate...

(With Air Asia the cheapest way to buy a ticket is by internet.)

How do you find such an office in Bangkok?

PS

Penang will provide a 60 day tourist visa, right? Then i can extend it 30 more days, right?

In Bangkok you can pay at the 12go desk in terminal one at the airport, do not know of other agents.

I've made payments at the airport as well. If I remembre correctyl it was the internet rate with a surcharge. Call air asia to get more info, done it before, they're pretty helpful.

I rang them.

Tesco Lotus, On Nut.

One way 1299 baht.

But that certainly does not include several other fees, eg insurance etc.

Looking at the internet it seems the ticket would be about 2600 baht however

Round trip is actually 4148 baht. And that *still* does not include airport tax...

Don't they give out those 60 day tourist visas when walking across the border at Mae Sai?

How many days should i plan to spend in Penang? I arrive at Penang at 10 in the morning and would go straight to the immigration office, if the would still be open...

Then i would collect the visa the next day...

Where would you recommend as a fun cheap place to stay and how much time to spend in Penang? Just arrive and leave the next day? Or arrive and stay two days or even longer?... Is it fun / expensive?

I bought my tickets from AIS in Siam Saquare.

I used to buy them at the airport too.

They were the same price.

I haven't used the internet site for well over a year, but when i last used it they wouldn't accept my Credit card. They claimed that their systems were unable to process with "foreign credit cards". I don't know if this has any truth or not but i had to pay at the airport in the end.

If you arrive in the morning you have to get to the embassy before 12. The visa will then be ready for collection in the afternoon of the next day. They do not accept any visa applications in the afternoon.

Arrive and go when you can, Penang is rubbish.

Yeah, but it's always nice to get a reply to your posting, that's what this site is for.

Waldorf Hotel on Leith Street is ok as far as Penang goes with regards mid-range/budget accommodation - about 50 Ringitt per night. There are oodles of cheaper options but some real <deleted> holes - stay away from the Swiss Hotel! Head to Chulia Street for the nightlife but don't expect Patpong and Nana Plaza et al. Some decent watering holes in the city though.

You could stay just the one night if your departing flight allows time for visa pick up. I couldn't stay anymore than 2 nights in a row in Penang but then again it's a good place to go to appreciate Muang Thai a lot more...you'll understand :o
