Sedatives

Featured Replies

I've been sleeping 4 to 5 hours max each night lately and i'm very exhausted. It's caused by stress from work and noisy neighbours.

I'd like to try some sedatives but don't know which one. I have to attend an important business meeting tomorrow so i have to get rid of the zombie-state feeling i'm currently in. I really really need at least 9 or 10 hours sleep or i'll be unable to attend tomorrow.

Can anyone recommend me a good sedative? I've tried all the herbal stuff and melatonine but that didn't work for me. I've tried oxazepam once before and i slept like a baby but that needs a prescription from a doctor right? What about Diazepam? Do i need a prescription for that?

I use a sedative for sleep fairly regularly it it will not get rid of the zombie feeling. It simply swaps exhaustion with sedation.

I bought some generic Diazepam from a pharmacy and took a 10mg pill 20 minutes ago but I'm not feeling very different yet, i'll wait another hour for the plasma levels to peak otherwise i'm going to pop in another one.

Diazepam is a controlled substance in Thailand and needs a prescription. As does stilnox.

AFAIK the best non prescription drug for this is Atarax, get the 25 mg dose (it is also sold in 100 mg strength for treatment of allergies), sleep dose can be anywhere form 25 - 100 mg. Most westerners would need at least 50mg. Depending on how desperate you are could start at that or at 75. But I would caution to take it at least 10 hours before you need to wake up as it does not wear off fast. If you take it too soon to wake up time you may be groggy in the morning. Otherwise most common side effect is dry mouth.

Best not to take too often, though, just once in a while and as with any drug google the side effects and contraindications.

sounds silly, but have you tried acupuncture?

I've been in a similar situation where sleeping tablets sure got me to sleep, but I woke up no more refreshed even though I got the requisite '8 hours'.

Acupuncture has helped me not only relax, but literally 'conk out' for a very restful and reinvigorating sleep.

I'd agree Sheryl that the best non precsription drug would be Atarax - a dose between 50mg - 100mg should suffice. This was a drug that we often used in the past in Acute admission wards with patients, as we generally tried to move away from the use of the Benzo's.

(Moderator's edit: Among prescription drugs..) Alprazolam 0.5-1mg should be a sufficient dose to someone who has not been using such medications. I would strongly argue against the benefits of using Diazepam for sleep disorder.

One of the "Z" group drugs would be better, and I have found Zopiclone 7.5mg be a better alternative to Zolpedime 10mg due to less side effects.

In any-case, those nedications should not be used for any period of more than 14 days.

However, also take on board making some lifestyle changes - diet, exercise and breathing (including relaxation /meditation/ acupuncture) these are all important facets in ensuring a good night sleep, along with some basic Sleep Hygeine tips, which you can easily google.

Posters are reminded that it is illegal for both seller and buyer to provide prescription only medications without a prescription and forum rules do not permit discussion of illegal activity.

readers should be aware that foreigners have been arrested for posession of prescription only drugs that they did not have a script for, even though a pharmacy openly sold it to them. In some cases this even occurs as a sort of sting operation.

The sellers get off scot free but the farang buyer can be stuck paying a large "fine" or even be jailed. It has happened.
