DSI Chief Confirms Getting Threats

The director general of the Department of Special Investigation admits that he and the department have been subject to death threats and other attacks.

Meanwhile, he is planning to propose easing of the freeze of financial accounts suspected to have been used to finance the red-shirt movement.

Department of Special Investigation, or DSI, Director General Tharit Pengdit confirmed the news that he has received death threats as well as threats of sabotage against his department via letters and phone calls.

Several unidentified individuals have been observed photographing Tharit's private residence as well as the DSI headquarters.

Investigations into the suspicious activities were useless when it was discovered that the vehicles used were equipped with fake license plates.

Phone threats to Tharit were made to his personal mobile phone by unnamed men using True Move numbers.

The DSI chief affirmed that a thorough probe will be launched to find those behind the threats. The first step of the investigation will be to determine if the threats are linked to the recent bombing incidents in Bangkok.

Tharit admitted to some apprehension over the situation while acknowledging that the threats have likely been motivated by his department's work against the red-shirt group.

He assured that he would persevere and continue with his duties.

Personal security for Tharit has been stepped up and military personnel have been dispatched to secure the DSI building.

Meanwhile, Tharit will today ask the Center for the Resolution of Emergency Situation to unfreeze the financial accounts of 83 individuals suspected of funding the red-shirt group.

He affirmed, however, that investigations against the suspected protest financiers will continue and justice will be served.

Tarit said Sia Meng used his wife's cousin, a lawyer, and her, to clear his tax debt and set everything up on a legal basis. She was previously investigated for this case as the area she worked in was a different jurisdiction to Sia Meng's and she was found not guilty of unethical practice.

Anyone asking for a bribe is going to ask for cash,not a cheque.

a) the Thai police are forensically incompetent

the Thai police are paid to be incompetent

c) someone very important / rich is behind it

d) it is all made up to justify further expenditure

e) it is all made up to create public anxiety and justify a crackdown

f) it is already well known who is responsible

g) all of the above.

Tarit is not worth killing. It adds no value.

His wife is different, as she will either be charged for:

1. Taking 150K bribe or

2. Did not pay tax on the 150k received.

I would think the man at the helm of the most controversial post in Thailand is lucky to still be walking around but the threats et al - all Mafia tactics, fear, threat, occasional suckers caught taking photos and so on - then we have the Thai's and others claiming he/his wife took bribes! No - really - not in Thailand. The whole country is on the take from the lowest motorbike rider to the man under the top - seems the PM is the only guy not squashed with slime at this point - but with more covert notes about the kwai daeng rearming and the most likely new uprising - is it any wonder the DSI and others still receive death threats? Time will tell but this is fast looking like Italy or HK. Dead bodies soon so the punters here can say - see - told you so!
