Okay, a while ago I posted the fact that my school was looking for teachers and was kind of shot down and accused of trying to scam people - so this time I'll give you the details and don't even bother contacting me, contact the school.

The situation is a bunch of teachers didn't come back after the end of year holiday and I also just left, I'm not entirely sure how many teachers they need but they need them soon as the parents are starting to complain.

I know for sure that they need a full time computer teacher for the high school and an English teacher for primary school (grade 4 to be precise) - but I'm pretty sure they need more than that.

The wages from what I know will be a minimum of 30,000 a month to a maximum of 45,000 per month as according to experience. The school is owned by, and on the grounds of Burapha university in Bang Saen (about half way between Bangkok and Pattaya) and is a very nice little town.

If you are interested email Dr.Surin at [email protected] and tell her that Keith gave you her email address.

Any idea what they mean by computer teacher - do they mean applications or programming.

Would appreciate feedback as I shall, hopefully, be available from Sept/Oct onwards

mmmm, july...i am unable to travel until january 2006...are there any tefl jobs available then?  or if not, when do schools begin hiring staff?

The regular school year ends in earliest March, and then there are some summer camps until school starts in May. There are always a few openings, but february and march and april may be the worst months. Can you afford to arrive in March and take a four or five week TEFL course?

I have just spoken to my girlfriend who works at the school, she has confirmed that they are looking for the teachers as mentioned.

Recently I heard that there is a shortage of English teachers all over the kingdom. Even at British Council! And I heard that "Dr." Shinawatra even brought up the subject of recruiting American teachers with "Dr." Rice.

Of course i hear a lot of things....

The problem is that the market (especially for TEFL teachers) just can't compete with wages elsewhere in Asia, largely because it still tolerates such a large number of "dodgy" teachers who keep wages down. The hassle dealing with the bureaucracy here doesn't add to the attraction.

In one sense, it's good for Thailand- because otherwise they might not have any English teachers at all, and it's good for some of the "dodgy" teachers- who might not otherwise have opportunities (and some of them do rise to the occasion quite well).

But you can't have your cake and eat it, too. If they want professional, career-oriented types from outside, they're going to have to compete in the international wage market, not the Thai one. And though many schools do have the money, they're simply not willing to do it.

As a side note, even paying a competitive wage is not really enough- there are a number of schools which have tried to hire only "proper" teachers, with a decent wage, but couldn't keep them because working conditions at the school were so unprofessional that they all quit!

I am planning on getting a TEFL certificate in Pattaya when I arrive in a few months. Are there any schools in particular that anyone can recommend. I will also be looking for job placement when the course is completed.

Thanks
