Hi there,

I just ran into this link: http://www.prestomypc.com/index.php

it looks quite interesting and it could be an good alternative if you really need to boot into a laptop fast ( presto seems to be based on xandros and i know the eeepc xandros does boot really fast) plus the idea of running a windoz pc even if you caught up with a "windoz"virus.

Did anyone actually try Presto ???

thanks,

I think Presto can be good but Xandros have some heavily criticized business connections that should be understood before you go ahead....

I have also the feeling that you can get the same upstart times from any Gnu/Linux based OS installed the normal way if you use hibernate/sleep mode or whatever...

Good point.....but what about those laptops that are passing bad DSDT tables to the O.S. (yes I'm looking at you Phoenix!)? My 'big' laptop craps its pants when I try to send it into sleep or hibernation--actually on resuming. In those cases a quick booting distro can really save your bacon. Plus even in sleep (although not hibernation) the laptop still has draw on its battery.

BTW, apparently Meego=Moblin+Maemo (the distro that Nokia used on the N900)...if that matters. Interestingly OpenSUSE has a Moblin build.

Moblin is interesting... Off-topic I know....

I think there will be some increased activity in the field of smaller systems. Many people have performance problems with the smaller netbooks that was delivered with Win7 starter... MS really doesn't have any alternative for this category.

What I really like with this development is that it makes some differences in the field of human machine interaction. I think the big desktops can take some of the spin-offs from this and make significantly more efficient environments in the future.

EVEN FURTHER OFF TOPIC

(apologies to all)

I'm still waiting for the ARM tablets to start showing up. With the exponential growth in the x86 world, coupled with increasing bandwidth, I could see a nice all day tablet being used as a thin client connected to a home server. Granted typing might be a pain, but there are bluetooth keyboards and mice. That takes care of the web/word processing/etc. Gaming has already been shown to work over the web and carefully coded clients could take use of the acceleramertor (spelling?) to control up/down/left right. Add in some 1/4 wheel thumb controls and you're set.

With all these different technologies coming together it seems that we're living in interesting times even if it harkens back to an older age.
