BANGKOK: -- It is a possibility that one of the redshirt protesters arrested for violating the emergency decree might be the same man wanted for a Narathiwat mosque massacre, Department of Special Investigation (DSI) directorgeneral Tharit Pengdit said yesterday.

"Judging from the information we have received, he is most likely the very same person," he said. "We are looking into the suspect's history."

Tharit was referring to Jakchalat Kongsuwan, reportedly a close aide to Army specialist MajGeneral Khattiya Sawasdiphol, who oversaw the red shirts' security measures before his death in May.

The latest information suggests that

Jakchalat might have previously been known as Suttirak Kongswan and reported himself to the Crime Suppression Bureau in January to face charges related to the fatal attack on alFurqon Mosque last year. Ten people, who were at the mosque performing religious rituals, were killed in the attack.

Suttirak, a former Army ranger, was then released on bail.

"But two months ago, his guarantor withdrew the bond," Tharit said.

Since he was arrested, Jakchalat has been reportedly providing crucial information to authorities, including an account about a woman, with K as her first initial, picking up money from former premier Thaksin Shinawatra and handing it over to Khattiya to fund violent operations.

It is widely speculated that the woman is Kanokwan Witjitrawiwat, a redshirt leader based in Prachin Buri.

When asked about this conjecture, Tharit said: "I cannot confirm it, because DSI has not yet received information on this."

However, he said, Kanokwan's home was being watched.

Meanwhile, a source said that relevant officials had also searched the three houses that were identified by Jakchalat as being the sites where the money changed hands.

According to the source, the first house located in the Buddha Mondhol area was now abandoned.

"The owner of the second house is already on the run, though we found three big safes there. We are in the process of opening them for examination," the source added.

The Criminal Court also issued arrest warrants for two more men spotted on the security footage allegedly setting fire to the CentralWorld shopping complex.

"We don't know their names yet," Pol LtColonel Phayao Thongsen said as a chief investigator in the terrorism cases.

So far, nine arrest warrants have been issued related to the CentralWorld case.

"We have already prosecuted suspected arsonists in two other cases, one at the Bangkok Bank's Phra Khanong branch in Bangkok and the other in Chiang Mai," Phayao said.

Meanwhile, Pheu Thai MPs Jatuporn Promphan and Karun Hosakul reported to the Criminal Court as required by their bail conditions. They face terrorism charges related to their role in the redshirt rally.

During their visit, they successfully obtained the court's permission to postpone the trial date, which was originally set for September 27 - the same date that the parliamentary session ends.

Jatuporn added that from next month, Pheu Thai MPs and key redshirt leaders would start delivering speeches nationwide to inform the public of the Pheu Thai Party's policies and the current government's poor performance.

Good to hear Thai law enforcement is doing some things right. I, for one, hope all the law breakers, whether wearing red or black shirts or whatever, are prosecuted and, if found guilty, given the full weight of consequences = jail, fines. ...and not the paltry fines of a few thousand baht, which Thailand is known for, but fines comensurate with the crimes. If the crimes were funded by millions of baht (and the damage in tens of millions of baht), then the fines should be in the millions of baht.

...I've heard of that happening in Thailand - a person will change their name (new ID card probably) in order to avoid consequences for crimes or debt. Thai justice should also bust the authorities who issue such new/fake ID cards. Fat chance, as crooked Thai bureaucrats always have a slew of excuses - any one of which will let them off the hook.

Interesting about the woman who purportedly channeled the large amounts of money from Thaksin (and from his friends and family, for sure) to the perpetrators of violence. She'll probably get a name change, though most certainly will wiggle and wrangle her way out of harm's way. If you manage to get into Wikileaks which is not consistently blocked in Thailand, you will quickly form a different opinion as to why it has been blocked. How will any one involved in the cases you mention appear in the ICC? Read up on criteria for the ICC accepting cases and you will quickly understand that your idea is impossible, even if Thailand were ever to ratify the Rome statute that would lead to its acceptance of the court's jurisdiction. The ICC will only accept cases relating to heinous crimes against humanity where there is no possibility of them being investigated in the countries they occurred. The notion that ICC might try local figures like Abhisit is pure nonsense put out by Thaksin's PR team for domestic consumption by morons. Thaksin knows this is rubbish because he has paid for legal opinions on the possibility of his own indictment in the ICC for human rights abuses which is also zero.

The Narathiwat mosque massacre was despicable regardless of whether a person is immersed in one religion or another. It didn't take any spiffy military tactics to massacre a bunch of people in cold blood. It just took a few very sick individuals who had access to automatic weapons. Two sicko killers, and one driver, that's about it. Even a 5 year old kid can point a gun and pull the trigger - the physical act of shooting a gun takes little skill.

Having said that, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Seh Daeng and his buddies were involved, at least peripherally - however, we'll have to see how the judicial process plays out. It's good to see there's no statute of limitations on massacres in Thailand (at least I hope not), and it's good to see authorities are willing to pursue the perpetrators as far as possible within the constraints of the law.

After a tense seven hour stand-off, Pallop ordered an all out assault on the mosque. All of the gunmen were killed. He later claimed, "I had no choice. I was afraid that as time passed the crowd would be sympathetic to the insurgents, to the point of trying to rescue them."

In September 2006, Army Commander Sonthi Boonyaratkalin, a Muslim, was granted an extraordinary increase in executive powers to combat the unrest.

A majority of the Muslims in the South have not taken part in any violence whatsoever and in fact, Muslims are targeted as much by extremist separatists as are Buddhists.

And Islam is a peaceful religion - yeah right - but then look at the Seh Daeng issue - live by the sword and he died by it. Extremists such as him deserve their fate and no disrespect to his family as they may (or not) be as bent as he was. They do what they believe is right and they are twisted enough to maim and kill in that belief ... and mostly urged to do so by others who are far more dangerous... hmmm - sounds like Islam. Merit-Making Ceremony for 100th Day After Seh Daeng's Death

The daughters and relatives of the deceased radical red-shirt Major-General Khattiya Sawasdipol have organized a merit-making ceremony to commemorate the 100th day since his death.

Kittiya and Khattiyaa Sawasdipol, daughters of the late radical red-shirt member, Major- General Khattiya, attended the merit-making ceremony to commemorate the 100th day since their father's passing at Sukhawararam Temple in Ratchaburi province.

Relatives of the pro-Thaksin army specialist donated a 30-inch Phra Nak Prok Buddha image, a Buddha figure sitting under the protection of the Naga king, to the temple. They also hosted a lunch for 50 monks.

Phra Nak Prok is the Buddha image sacred to those born on Saturday, which is Khattiya's birthday.

Also participating in the ceremony were a number of red-shirt supporters, who were under the security and supervision of police officers and security volunteers.

However, the emergence of Nak-rob Sawasdipol or "Daeng Noi" (Little Daeng), a five-year-old boy claiming to be Seh Daeng's son, was a surprise. Khattiya had never told her she had a brother. And Seh Daeng's cremation was the only day she saw the boy.

Red-Shirt Figure Charged for May Unrest

The Crime Suppression Division today filed charges in court against another red-shirt figure wanted for his alleged role in the political unrest in May.

A commando unit of the Crime Suppression Division escorted Jakchalat Kongsuwan to the Criminal Court to face charges of illegally possessing firearms, providing shelter for other criminal suspects, and forging official documents.

Jakchalat is a close aidd of army specialist Major-General Kattiya Sawasdipol, who was assassinated during the red-shirt protests.

Jakchalat was wanted for helping another suspect, and another of Kattiya's close aides, Pornwat Thongsombun, to flee after an arrest warrant was issued against the latter in a bomb attack case.

Public prosecutors have resolved to file charges with the Criminal Court against the two and six others for their alleged involvement in several terror attacks during the protests as recommended by police investigators.

Good on Thai investigators for pursuing these tough cases. Resolve, courage, stealth, professionalism and not bowing to pressure from powers-that-be (to squelch their duties) .....those are some of the qualities needed to untie the gordian knot that Thaksin and his henchmen and women have woven. Best of all, Thai authorities working on these cases will know they're doing good for the general good of Thailand and its people.

It's a long tough row to hoe, but they're doing it, and they get my respect - when they do it right.
