Limbo Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 ... and haven't worked out the editing process yet which explains the hairy elbows intruding in the photos. Don't worry, they add a certain flavour to your excellent pictures... The funny thing with that place is that the owner always gives you the impression that he makes an exception when he allows you to eat there. But it even gets worse when he starts to play his guitar 555! Their bread tasts even better than the patisserie of Charin Garden. A good occasion to mention Wana Farm as they get theirs from the same bakery I believe. And, mentioning Wana Farm: that's the place where you can have a ride on a ostrich and subsequently consume an ostrich burger or steak. It's on the road to Sven ... Limbo
sceadugenga Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 He's quite a character... he made sure to tell us he keeps his prices high to keep the riff raff out.
harrry Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 He's quite a character... he made sure to tell us he keeps his prices high to keep the riff raff out. He isnt't the banned CM forum resturaunteer who had a famous NO Free Water thread is he. He even has a "No Riff Raff" sign.
sceadugenga Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 No, that's the English pub in Chiang Mai. Red Lion? Personally I prefer the Chiang Mai Saloon, the Mexican food isn't bad there either.
DonaldBattles Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 I recommend Don's Water Front Cafe in the scenic foot hills of Doi Hang as one of the outstanding western food, bakery and deli in Chiang Rai. Established 7 years ago and personally operated by the owner and his wife who also do the cooking. Free fishing for customers in the two lakes. The Little Longhorn Saloon offers a place for relaxing and conversation for many people.
sceadugenga Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 And an excellent establishment it is too Don, I certainly wouldn't make a 300km return trip to Chiang Khong when I could drive to Doi Hang for a taco. The purpose of recommending other restaurants that far away is so people can try them if they are on a day out or in that particular town for some reason. It would be a very boring life if we had to take a packed lunch everywhere.

Limbo Gotta say we had a great time here, the ostrich ride was good fun not easy though but you have to try, the missus prefered the horse ride or you could opt for the buggy ride, we tried them all, have to say the food we ate was so so, well worth a couple of hours of your time and the prices were right.

Well Don's a sponsor of the forum, so he's paid for the privilege to promote his business, whereas you have not paid for the privilege to promote your wife's biz as you shamelessly did a few days ago you naughty naughty boy. You need to learn to read, I have never promoted my wife's restaurant. You probably need to say a place's name to promote it, at least if you expect to get any benefit from it. I even went as far as to tell Sceadugenga when he picked up the coke that I procured for him, that we have no interest in attracting farang customers and don't even have a menu in English.
sceadugenga Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 Don't worry about him, he reads only what he wants to read. Heeey... that coke was great stuff man.....

Wow, maybe I've got the wrong poster, but If you hadn't promoted yr wife's restaurant how would I know you had a wife or a restaurant? I think you gave the location too. In any case your criticism of Don is completely uncalled for.

I think you gave the location too. In any case your criticism of Don is completely uncalled for. Congratulations Sherlock. You managed to deduce from the fact that I said "my wife's restaurant" that I had a wife and my wife had a restaurant. That really is impressive. It's almost as if you can read English. Of course, understanding English is a different matter but hopefully that will come with practice. You are right also that I did give a general location also (in which there are a number of restaurants actually) as Sceadugenga didn't want to drive to Makro and there would be little point in me offering to obtain the product that he required if "my wife's restaurant" (more shameless promotion) was in an area equally as inconvenient for him. I don't think I criticised Don. I stated an opinion. have you already been outed as being a fake nick of sunholidaysun by the way?
changraider Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 Your sarcasm reflects only on yourself. If I were Don I'd simply get the mods to remove your post. The sponsors, like Don, pay for the service we all use Paul, have a great weekend.
thegovernor Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 Lena House. At Ban Mueang Klang When you guys go to MaiSai on your return stop at a little place 7ks before MaeChan. You will be suprised at the quality of the food offed. His pizza is great and his home made pies are to die for. Took 10 home with me they are as good as you will get any where in any country. Best I have had. If you dont go you wont know. Its very hard to spot as its on a straight road but look for the pie sign. Its well worth the visit. The Governor says the pies are ok,not to die for(thats taking the compliment too far) they are not bad for Chiang rai, even Thailand but compared to a bakery in England, they are just ok,too much pastry but his pizza's are very ok..........OK.

Limbo Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 . . . . Just some culinairy considerations ... For quite a while I hadn't visited the Swiss Deli. As if I got used to live without excellent cheese (Gouda, Edammer, Emmenthaler etc), good meat products (Lyoner, salami's and Bauernschinken) and its excellent smoked salmon. Yes, I was even buying the bread elsewhere. How it happened I don't know exactly, but slowly but sure my own lovely princess steered me into another food pattern, rather predictably more and more leaning Thai. We should never forget that we are living in a country which 'cuisine' is represented all over the world and is considered to be among the finest there are. Yes, lucky us! I think I'm not the only member of this remarcable society who, with all respect, would consider it a serious punishment if I would have to return to my homeland's stews. But this culinary intermezzo more than doubled the joy of 'discovering' the Swiss Deli again, with its raw, as if they were cold climate inspired, straightforward and irresistible courtships of our western palate! Not only to enjoy an old-fashioned genuine Weihenstephaner White, but also for the pleasure of shopping delicious delicacies the Swiss is the place to go whenever you, for instance, have had to pay a visit to the post office. That brings us to its location: Coming out of the Post Office you are not going to the old relocated clocktower or the market, but in opposite direction, to the left thus. At the first crossing, at the traffic light a hundred meters further, you will find the Wat Klang Wiang at your right and almost at the opposite corner the Swiss Deli. Other famous places in its immediate surroundings (within ten meters) are of course the barbershop of the wife of one of our Swedish golfing friends, who probably after the necessary rounds of practising on the latters coiffure developed herself into the local specialist on unruly western hair. She does it quick and painless! And, of course, one of the finest restaurants of Chiang Rai, the Ban Klang Wiang, famous for its superb 'plank' and 'Carl-Gustav' steaks and pizza's. Also here Swedish influence can be tasted: the mastercook of this marvellous restaurant learned his cooking skills in Sweden. This is not the first favorable review in this thread, it is one of the best! The exquise quality of the meat, the careful and expert way of preparing it and last but not least its subtile presentation make the consuming of it to an unknown sensation. So if you need a haircut again ... Limbo PS: The Swiss Deli now also has Schweinshaxe!

sceadugenga Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 I got a piece of an excellent Gorgonzola there last month. People who like their cheese to taste like cheese would be impressed with it.
Limbo Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 I got a piece of an excellent Gorgonzola there last month. People who like their cheese to taste like cheese would be impressed with it. Exactly Scea, thanks for wording it so brilliantly! I had exactly the same experience, though in my case it was a semi-matured Gouda that did the trick! I immediately had this feeling of recognition. Without any misunderstanding: this was not only the taste of cheese, but also the consistency of its substance. The way it sensationally melted in my mouth brought it all back again. Suddenly the pieces came together: it was the genuine sensation of eating a good cheese! Summarizing: A fantasticly balanced strenght in taste, comfortably embedded in the surprising mildness of its price. That characterizes the cheese of the Swiss Deli! Perfect Sven! Now everybody will know where it is Limbo PS: In two weeks the new sausages of the Swiss Deli are ready and most of them are ordered by 'Chiang Mai'. As everybody already agrees on the fact that you have to go to Chiang Mai for good sausages we better keep it a secret
Limbo Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 Any smoked Gouda perchance? My dear Scorpio, You are stretching it very, very far, but I will forward the question to Kurt anyhow 555! His smoked ham I remember, thin cut and salty, demanding great discipline not to stuff your mouth with, but smoked Gouda? By the way: The Swiss Deli also sells the excellent sauces and other products of 'Pickle Rob', Thaibasco comes to mind, who is doing fine now after laying down with his heavy brother Harley D. last week. I'm very curious to hear about the 'Schweinshaxen'. They are done hanging above charcoal in one of these big Chinese style pots at about 200 degree C. I didn't see any Gouda hanging in the same pot ... Limbo

I caressed it like it was the cheek of a former lover whom you sometimes wake in the night and think of.... but know that it can never be again.
