I have been recommended to buy a Canon G11, which is new to Phuket, although available on the Internet for about a year @ around $US 400./450

Power Buy in Central want 18900bht, Apple shop 16900, Canon Shop 19900!

Can anyone help me to a shop with more competitive pricing?

Thailand is pricey for this kind of stuff, I am actually surprised it was as low as 17k in the apple shop. I stock up on toys during trips back home.

Personally prefer the S90 with the front control ring, the G11 is quite a large lump. If your going that size your almost in the new micro 4/3rd range of cams, tho they are still at a bit of a price premium.

AV camera in bangkok would be worth contacting, one of the countries biggest for high end gear.

There are camera shops at big C, At the entrance to Big C and in the basement,

They are pretty competitive, might be worth checking there.

Thanks for the info,

Will give 'em both a try.

My friend who is a semi-professional photographer uses the G11 as her 'point and shoot'. Good lens but quite big for a 'compact'.

But the question is where to buy it cheaply. Current spec cameras are often cheaper in Europe and if you have any friends coming over it may be worth checking the price in the UK and getting someone to bring it over. However, that Apple shop price does look quite competitive.

In the distant past Canon cameras were more expensive than other brands in Thailand but this has improved with all the large discount stores. I now see little difference between Australia and Thailand on price. Nikon is made in Thailand and their cameras are always well priced in Thailand. The G12 is due out next month so I'd wait as the G11 will do down immediately in price.

Watch the special promotions at Big C, Lotus and Carrefour as they often have a couple of cameras on special weekly. I bought a Sony HX5 and are very happy with it. It is pretty much all auto but does a fantastic job in virtually every situation. It has this awesome backlight filter mode which is fantastic for the bright beach shots in Phuket. The sweep panorama mode is sensational as well for landscapes. I still have a Canon powershot and was a loyal canon buyer but this sony has made me more open to other brands.

Thailand is pretty much a sony dominated market but the SRL's are well priced as you go up the model range. The best place I've seen is online where you order directly from Malaysia. The G11 is a pretty expensive camera everywhere I've seen it and the prices you quote sound quite reasonable. I'd post a link but your not allowed.

very helpful, thanks; I think best to wait awhile to see if ,as you say, the G11 may reduce after the new model arrives

trouble is the G11 has only just arrived here this month!
