I'm considering taking Metformin for off label reasons
If you suspect you might have pre-diabetes, get an HbA1c blood test to confirm / rule it out. If you are pre-diabetic, adjusting your diet and lifestyle can reverse it. That's preferable to taking any pills or potions. If you're considering Metformin, you might like to take a look at Berberine. It's a herb that has many benefits, some of which have been compared to Metformin. There's a lot of good stuff online, including on YouTube. Google "Berberine or Metformin for pre-diabetes" or similar searches and you'll find heaps of info out there. Some doctors and practitioners recommend Berberine over Metformin for blood sugar control. Personally, I avoid pharmaceuticals. If I had a medical condition, I'd always look to natural products, like Berberine, first. But the best thing to do is to make lifestyle and dietary adjustments to address the root cause. -

Crime Two Couples Arrested in Huge Thai Meth Haul in Uttaradit
Pictures courtesy of Daily News Thai police have nabbed two couples with a staggering 1.48 million methamphetamine pills, worth over 15 million baht. The suspects, using two delivery trucks, were intercepted during a well-coordinated operation in the Uttaradit province. The couples reportedly admitted to being hired for 200,000 baht to transport the drugs from Chiang Rai to Nonthaburi. On 15 August, Police Lieutenant General Kittisak Durongkibibul, along with senior police officials, unveiled the capture of Apilak, 24, Wipa, 25, Santipap, 20, and Pornsawan, 20. Their illicit cargo was discovered concealed in eight bags on a public road connecting Phrae and Uttaradit. The breakthrough came after authorities received a tip about an upcoming drug transfer set for 12 August. The suspects were caught on the Jerim-Nang Paya Road in Thapla district. A search of their vehicles uncovered a stash of 1.48 million methamphetamine pills and a small quantity of ketamine. Investigations revealed the couples’ modus operandi involved using the popular delivery trucks. One vehicle served as the lead, while the other carried the drugs through community routes to bypass police checks. The group reportedly completed three successful deliveries prior to their arrest. Police stressed their commitment to tackling drug trafficking and are continuing investigations to uncover further links in the operation. The detained individuals face serious charges as they are transferred to Thapla Police for legal proceedings, reported Daily News. The arrest highlights ongoing efforts by Thai authorities to combat drug smuggling networks that exploit lesser-known routes. Vehicles such as these trucks are increasingly popular with traffickers due to their inconspicuous nature and ease of movement across inter-provincial roads. Such vigilant operations underline the challenges faced by law enforcement in intercepting sophisticated smuggling attempts. The case also underscores the lure of quick money that draws individuals into the drug trade, risking severe legal consequences. With stringent measures in place, authorities are hopeful of dismantling more smuggling operations and curbing the spread of illegal drugs. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the persistent battle against drug networks in the region. Adapted by ASEAN Now from Daily News 2025-08-16 -

Fire Late-Night Blaze Guts Popular Steakhouse in Nonthaburi
Pictures courtesy of Khoasod. A well-known restaurant and pub in Bang Bua Thong, Nonthaburi, was gutted by fire late night on 15 August, prompting a frantic evacuation but leaving all patrons and staff uninjured. The blaze broke out at around 23.30 at the Saharat Steak House, located within the Sombat Buri Market complex. Police from Bang Bua Thong Station, led by Pol Lt Col Suriya Polchoo, coordinated with firefighters from four local municipal units to battle the flames, which had engulfed the second floor of the two-storey building. Fire crews took approximately an hour to bring the blaze under control. Early reports indicate the fire originated near the stage area inside the restaurant, possibly from sound equipment located behind the performance platform. Musician “Boat”, 36, who was performing on stage at the time, described the moment he spotted flames erupting behind him near the men’s toilets. “At first I didn’t hear anything unusual, then I saw the fire start to spread,” he said. “The owner tried pouring water on it, but the flames grow stronger. I just thought about getting out alive. Luckily, everyone, staff and customers, managed to escape.” Security guard Manas Samang, who patrols the Sombat Buri complex, said he noticed the fire while on his motorbike rounds. “I saw flames on the second floor and ran up with a fire extinguisher. The blaze was coming from behind the stage where the sound system was. I used two extinguishers but couldn’t stop it because it spread so fast.” Police suspect an electrical short circuit as the cause but have requested forensic experts to carry out a detailed examination of the site.
