I am under 50 and from the UK, I currently hold a tourist visa which will run out in December this year...however:

When this runs out I will only have 1 page left in this passport, plus I would like to apply for a non o visa based on visiting friends and family.

The thing is my in law relative is going back to the UK for a week around the time I need a new visa, can anyone one tell me if the below is possible?

I am thinking of applying for a new passport in thailand nearer the end of the year (eg Nov) as I will need a new passport anyway - as I have all my up to date exit/entry stamps etc will the deactivate my current passport?

When my new passport arrives can I give it to my inlaw to then apply via post for a non O from hull for me, he will return on the 10th Dec and I need to leave thailand by 12 dec (when my TV expires) so...could I then exit on my old passport and re-enter on my new passport which will have a non o visa inside?

I am not 100% decided hence the question :)

Thanks for any help

When applying for a new passport you have to apply to Hong Kong.

What you suggest regarding the Visa would be illegal and will get you in serious trouble. :o

I am a bit confused how you wrote the questions but here goes. First, as you have only one page left in your passport you don't have enough space for a visa and exit/entry stamps. You need a new passport which you can get in the UK but only if you are actually over there. You cannot get a new passport if you are out of the country.

As you are in Thailand you can only get a new passport issued through the regional centre in Hong Kong. You need the application forms (downloadable for the British Embassy web site) a copy of your passport, photgraphs (make sure you read and follow the guidelines!) and a paper which comes with the application form authorising them to use your credit card for payment. Don't send your current passport, it must not go out of Thailand whilst you are here.

Send everything by DHL.

As soon as they receive your application your current passport is electronically cancelled so you cannot use it to leave Thailand. It is left to you to cut off the corners when your new passport is received here at the address you supplied in thailand.

You obviously cannot ask someone else to use your new passport in the UK to ask for a visa as it would mean your passport is out of Thailand so you would be left here with a cancelled passport.

So, your choices are

1. Get a new passport from Hong Kong then go to Immigration and get your stamps/current visa transferred. Then apply for a visa in a nearby country.

2. Go to the UK and get a new passport there, then get a new visa from the consilate in Hull.

Hope that helps.

Sorry maybe a bit thick what is "illegal and will get you in serious trouble"

My passport runs out in Feb 2012... Re Hull website they will send your passport to anywhere in Europe..

Myself had thought to apply to HK for a new passport and have it sent to my HK friend, he goes to the UK every month for 5 days on Business, so could send my new passport with the Application Form filled out by me to Hull, and then bring it back to HK, I would leave BKK before my 90 days exit to HK as normal and pick up my new passport while visiting my friend there, then a few days later would re enter Thailand with my new passport with new 1 year Thai '0' Visa. Is this illegal and why ?

Why would the OP be doing something illegal ? he is leaving Thailand before the exit date + returning with a new passport with new Visa. He is under 50 so would be a '0' so must exit every 90 days

Edit: As the OP said his friends would be back with his new passport on the 10th and he has a 90 day Visa last day being 12th... The above poster suggest he takes his new passport and get the stamp transferred = wasting a page in new passport for a 2 day transfer ?

Dont think I will do what I originally asked, but just to clarify what i meant

1. by the time by current tourist visa expires i will have 1 page left in my current passport, I have enough room now to go to the border next week, and then extend at CM immigration in 2 months time

2. after this i need a new visa, but whatever visa i get I will need a new passport as a non o takes up 1 full page i wont have enough room for my entry stamp etc there arre still a few years remaining on mypassport its a simple case of i will have no more pages

3. I had read previously that you can send you passport to a 3rd person (ie my family member) in the the uk and they would apply for the visa on my behalf, the hull consulate would send my passport back to the family member in the UK who would then give to me...hull confirmed this BUT they clearly stated you MUST have an exit stamp from thailand...so that is correct have to be out of thailand. Just to clarify also I didnt mean get my family member to apply as if he were me and get stamps for me :)

4. I thought i may be able to get a new passport in nov while in thailand from hong kong which i will need in nov regardless, i just didnt know whether to give my in law this NEW passport and instead of posting it to him if i were in a neighboring country such as laos etc he simply takes it when he visits home and returns when he comes back (we live in the same house here)

5. when he returns i thought i may be able to exit thailand on my old passport spend a few days in another country and return to thailand with BOTH passports (ie to show i exited with my old) and enter back in with my new and get the enter stamp in this new one plus i would have my new o visa

I dont think I will do this as Im confusing myself more :) but just wanted to know if I could

thanks anyways

Your old passport would show you are in Thailand when you received the visa in the new passport. If they found out it could mean trouble.

Besides that, you can only swap passports while traveling by air. Otherwise entry and exit stamps won't match.

It might be legal if the visa is applied for while you stay in another country than Thailand.

many have suggested that you can do this from a neighbouring country, and it does not break any thai laws, but i think the problem is at the UK end: the hull website says it only send to uk addresses or possibly to the EU also, and my guess this is for a specific reason. also, on the application form, you are required to enter your departure dates, so you would have to lie on the application from, because you would no be departing from the UK - i think that is obtaining something by deception.

ok fully understood thanks all - looks like I will be home in the UK for xmass :)

Have a look here http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Passports/howlongittakesandurgentappplications/DG_174148

+ allow another week for the Thai Visa from Hull....

Just an idea, renew your passport now and then fly the 6 hrs to Perth Aus and get the yearly '0' it is very easy and straight forward in Perth + can collect same day... BIG PROBLEM is Perth Thai Consulate is closing down in October.

Mario 2008 "It might be legal if the visa is applied for while you stay in another country than Thailand".

Is there a set rule for this situation? Is it Legal or illegal?

New passport with friends in the UK.

Leave Thailand on old passport.

Arrive to Singapore or Hong Kong or Taipei etc, on business for a month.

Get friends to send your completed signed forms to Hull for a Non O Visa after you departed Thailand.

Hull send back your new passport with visa to UK address.

Friends forward your passport either via person or DHL etc.

Return to Thailand showing new passport and visa.

MANICMINER "on the application form, you are required to enter your departure dates, so you would have to lie on the application from, because you would no be departing from the UK"

Does that mean all the people that apply from around the European Union, to Hull for a visa, have to depart from the UK to Thailand? Or are they "obtaining something by deception" when they depart from Paris, Amsterdam, Rome etc.

It's got me thinking.

Boycie.

Thailand will not accept a visa that was issued while the passport holder was in Thailand.

Consulates are expected to only issue visas to those in there area of responsibility.

These are not laws but general policy. Thus exceptions can occur.
