Insurgents launch 30 attacks to seek publicity: deputy southern Army chief

Hat Yai, Songkhla -- Deputy southern Army chief Maj Gen Udomchai Thammasarorat said Monday that insurgents launched some 30 attacks in Narathiwat Sunday to seek publicity.

He said the insurgents wanted to created turbulence before the end of the fasting month to seek publicity.

"They want to make news because the attacks were aimed at damaging properties, not to kill or harm anyone," Udomchai said.

New Politics Party Expects Violence from September to November

The spokesperson for the New Politics Party has warned of a potential escalation in political violence, including a possible assassination attempt of political figures in the next few months.

At a press briefing, Spokesperson for the New Politics Party Samran Rodpetch said he believes it is likely that political violence will escalate between September to November due dissatisfaction about the recent government appointments and the Democrat Party's dissolution case, which has stirred dissatisfaction among the hard-line supporters of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Samran has also warned that there could be an assassination attempt on important political figures, in an effort to destabilize the government.

The spokesperson for the New Politics Party also pointed out that among the politicians who are at risk of being assassinated is Newin Chidchob , the de facto leader of the coalition's Bhumjaithai Party, and the person believed by many to be the engineer behind the transfer of many members from the opposition's Pheu Thai Party to the Bhumjaithai Party.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister in charge of the national security, Suthep Thaugsuban said that security authorities have not learned of any assassinations being planned, but says the government will remain cautious. Suthep also stated that this will not affect the government's decision to lift the State of Emergency in more areas. He claimed that the government is basing its decision on facts, not on speculations.

Chuan rushed to hospital of back pain

Democrat Party chief advisor Chuan Leekpai was rushed to a hospital at noon Monday after he suffered a back pain.

He was rushed from a court room at the Supreme Court at 12:30 pm.

Chuan attended a trial session in the party dissolution case against the Democrat and appeared restless.

At the end of the session, Chuan rose to pay respect to the judges and sate down and cried out in pain.

The team of Democrat lawyers escorted him to a hospital immediately.

Eastern Residents to Appeal Map Ta Phut Ruling

Residents of Thailand's eastern provinces say they will appeal a Administrative Court ruling on the projects allowed to move ahead at the Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate. The appeal will be carried out in late September. However, they will meet with the head of the joint committee, Anand Panyarachun, this evening.

ATTACK AT BHUM JAI THAI

Another suspect arrested

Police said Monday they have arrested another suspect, allegedly involving in a bomb attack near headquarter of the Bhum Jai Thai Party.

Police claimed that Suriya Bhumwong, 39, was arrested in the northern province of Chiang Mai on Sunday and was later taken to Bangkok.

Police claimed Suriya confessed that he assembled the bomb and put it in a gas cylinder. He however said he did not know when and how the bomb would be used.

Detectives from the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) Monday morning are questioning the suspect and will take him to a re-enactment in the afternoon at the home of Varissareeya Boonsom, another suspect who is now in police custody.

Suriya will also be taken to the Bhumjaithai Party head office for a re-enactment.

Police have so far arrested six out of seven identified suspects with outstanding warrants for their involvement in the bombing. The last is Samran whose family name is unknown is still at large.

A bomb hidden in a fruit pushcart was remotely detonated near the Bhumjaithai party head office on June 22, seriously wounding Anek Singkhuntod, the cart vendor.

Police detained Anek after he confessed to being hired to park his pushcart close to the Bhumjaithai Party office.

Several days later, two red shirts security guards alleged to be behind the bombing were detained in Chantaburi and Chonburi respectively.

Cambodian officials arrested Varissareeya Boonsom and Korbchai Boonplod, another two suspects in the bombing who fled to the neighbouring country just one day after the incident and handed them over to Thai consular officials in Phnom Penh early July.

“Khun Ma Di” starts collecting people´s data for 2010 census

BANGKOK: - The National Statistical Office (NSO) has started to dispatch 70,000 officials to conduct the 2010 enumeration of the census.

Information and Communication Technology (MICT) Minister Chuti Krairiksh on Monday visited the NSO Office to preside over the official launch of NSO staff called “Khun Ma Di” to conduct the 11th round of Population and Housing Census. He was accompanied by MICT Permanent Secretary, Sue Lor-uthai and NSO Deputy Director- General Jirawan Boonperm.

The group aims to approach local residents to collect fundamental information of citizens. The information will then be used in implementing adequate policies and plans related to economic and social status of citizens and expatriates across the country.

NSO urges citizens to share their information via four available methods, which are direct interview, mail, telephone interview Tel 1111 ext 6 as well as www.nso.go.th.

Thaksin supports reconciliation: Noppadon claims

Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra supports the Pheu Thai Party's decision to join the efforts to create political reconciliation in the country, his legal advisor, Noppadon Pattama, claimed Monday.

But Thaksin wants all political groups and movements to join the efforts to create long-term reconciliation for the sake of the country.

Thaksin does not want the Pheu Thai to reconcile with the Democrat just to help the Democrat Party-led coalition government complete its term, Noppadon said.

He said Thaksin want the reconciliation efforts to be carried out based on justice, mercy and democratic principles.

He said Thaksin did not harbor personal grudge against anyone and was not bent on taking revenge as alleged by his opponents.

Education Minister Suspends Vocational School for 7 Days

Education Minister Chinnaworn Boonyakiat has ordered the Bangkapi Technology School to close its doors for seven days as punishment for last week's bus shooting which killed a nine year old boy. He has revealed that an inter-ministry panel has been set up to deal with the problem of vocational school violence.

Drug suspect gunned down in front of Chon Buri court

CHON BURI: -- A drug suspect was gunned down after he exited the provincial court here, police said.

Police said Putthipong Sunanwiriyamakorn, 40, was shot at his forehead while he was starting his car.

The gunman inside another car sped off.

Police said Putthipong went to the court to ask for a postponement of his arraignment in a case that he was arrested allegedly with 11 grammes of 'ice' drug.

Earlier, he was suspected of being involved in another drug case in which police seized some 200,000 methamphitamine pills in front of a sea foods restaurant in Chon Buri's Muang district.

Thailand Post´s financial service will be announced by Sept

BANGKOK: -- Thailand Post will announce a clearer direction on its upcoming financial service by September.

According to Managing Director of Thailand Post Chakkrit Parapuntakul, concise moves have been conducted towards the launch of "Bank for the Poor", following the government’s remarks in making Thailand Post a financial service provider for the poor.

The banking concepts are believed to be clarified within the month of September, whether the clarification on its service or a provision of additional capital to help secure the low-interest loans. Thailand Post may seek a discussion with Krung Thai Bank and Government Savings Bank since both are Thailand's leading state-run banks. Therefore they should also support the government’s policies.

Apart from the banking job, Thailand Post will also explore the option of selling insurance. All insurance companies will be able to partake in the auction to seek highest benefits to be gained by the Thailand Post.

The plan to become a financial service provider came after Thailand Post’s past achievements and abilities to maintain its efficiency and competence. Presently, Thailand Post has expanded its branches to 1,280 nationwide and tending to use postmen to approach locals, therefore, anything to increase business value and additional profits are on its agendas.
