Does this mean that the visa run to Mae Sai from Chiang Mai is not longer available until after the Myanmar election. If correct ex-pats will have to go to Laos or Cambodia for visa renewal

I was at the Burma embassy in Bangkok on Thursday 9th September. The Visa on arrival has indeed been canceled until further notice.

To get a Tourist visa for Burma, this is the procedure

Go to the Burma embassy near the Surasak BTS station in Bangkok - take exit 3 down the stairs and turn back on yourself heading up about 300m, walking past the Christian School on your left and a big Christian Church on the right (opposite side of the road). The embassy is a grey walled building on a junction corner on the left hand side.

Bring:

- your passport with at least 6 months validity still on it

- a colour photocopy of your passport ID page (important as they have no on-site photocopier)

- 2 colour passport size photos

- a pen

Go to counter 4 on the left side and ask for the Tourist visa forms - there are 3 pages to fill out.

For the work history bit, do not put anything like Journalist, Government Agent, Human Rights Activist, Spy or anything remotely controversial. There is even a place to enter your father's name etc. They are paranoid.

The cost is 810 baht per Tourist visa.

The visa takes about 2 working days for them to process and they give you a receipt. Pickup times for your Visa is 3.30pm to 4.30pm ONLY.

You should have mentioned here that this has nothing to do with visa runs to Tachilek. According to reports in Chiang Mai - visa runs to Tachilek are not affected!

This tourist visa is only needed when you arrive BY AIR into Rangoon!

You should have mentioned here that this has nothing to do with visa runs to Tachilek. According to reports in Chiang Mai - visa runs to Tachilek are not affected!

This tourist visa is only needed when you arrive BY AIR into Rangoon!

As stated this issue has no bearing on visa ruins to Mae Sai and Ranong.
