Burmese workers continue Khon Kaen protest

Khon Kaen -- Hundreds of Burmese workers Friday continued protesting against their employer, Decha Fishing Net Factory, over low wages. The protest began on Thursday.

The workers complained that they were being paid just Bt144 per day, and nothing for overtime, while Thai workers at the same factory were earning a daily wage of Bt157 plus overtime. The factory reportedly has about 4,300 foreign workers, most of them Burmese.

Some of the protesters also complained that their passports appear to have been modified.

"We are worried that this modification may make it impossible for us to return home," a 25yearold worker said.

Khon Kaen immigration officials have, so far, declined to comment.

No court injunction on Jaruvan case

BANGKOK: -- The Central Administrative Court ruled on Friday to turn down a petition for issue an injunction to suspend auditor general Khunying Jaruvan Maintaka pending the judicial decision on the administrative dispute related to her qualifications to hold office beyond the mandator retirement age of 65.

In its ruling, the court said although Jaruvan's job status was being disputed, the complainant in this case, which is the Office of the Ombudsman, was not an injured party linked to the Office of the Auditor General, hence there was no ground to seek the injunction.

The court's hearing on the case is complete although the verdict session has yet to be scheduled.

Without the injunction, Jaruvan is free to carry on her work pending the outcome of the judicial review.
