Farang Scams In Thailand

I have seen reference in a few posts to scams by farengs.

What ones have been encountered?

about six months ago I was sitting in a quiet bar down the end of soi 4, when a canadian male of about 25-30 years of age came in with a variety of mobile phones, sat down at the bar and give a little sales pitch, to the tune of your mobile maketh the man.( you want me to hum a few bars? ) when I picked up one of his phones( that nokia with the qwerty k/board ) the weight seemed indicate there was not a battery installed, so I popped off the back cover and realised that it was just a display phone, the kind they leave out for people to look at. I asked him about this and he told me yes,

he was just selling a sample phone, he was able to buy them for so many dollars per thousand, and he just went around the bars selling them to drunk english speakers for about 500 baht each. I did not think that people could be that silly, but he said he had no worries selling them.(add grain of salt). me told me he does the rounds of the tourist spots in thailand, and he said he had been doing that kind of thing for about six years.

I decided that I did not wish to be irresistable to women, who found the sight of a man pretending to chat on the latest model mobile phone, an indication that he was a desirable partner .

I do not think I have seen him since.

And prove just what Ying Yang?

Whatever do you get out of that. If it was personal and you suffered, sure, but not because "he tried to sell fake stuff" as opposed to "he suckered me into parting with 500 baht because I was drunk and stupid".

Get a grip man.

I've heard the one about the farang guy chatting up a single farang girl (same nationality), getting friendly, and then, when the girl gives him the opportunity, he steals everything she has of value. One particular story I heard was from a german girl who had met this german guy, he acted really friendly, told her he'd been in thailand awhile and could show her the sights etc. After meeting him for a couple of days, off she went to the bathroom (foolishly!) leaving her bag on the table. She came, bag was gone, so was the guy.

Then there was the guy busted in Hadrin, had been robbing the rooms of the place he was staying, watch the guests go out for dinner and then break into their rooms. Got caught when the owner staked the place out because he was having such a rash of break-ins. Guy had more than 40 cameras! Guess he had been doing it for awhile.

All just really charming people, wonder why thailand is cracking down on visa regs?

I was sitting at Siam Discovery and an older guy sat next to me and asked where I was from, how long I had been here, etc. He spoke good English with an accent and I think he was Filipino.

After awhile he told me that he dealt cards at a gambling casino in Malaysia (Genting Island). He asked if I wanted to make some money because he had friends in Las Vegas who dealt cards and he knew a sure fire way to get some free money from the casino. He was willing to share his knowledge with me and split the proceeds.

I guess the ploy was that he would take me someplace in Bangkok to teach me how to gamble using his menthod and make the money (no doubt my money going to him). I told him to shove off as it was a scam and he would have to a total idiot to try to scam the Las Vegas casinos.

This point should be reinforced.

Many local farang cons are violent and ought not to be messed with.

Can I humbly suggest an amendment Andrew, please... nothing serious but try Many "drunks" as opposed to "many falang con-men", see how it fits into the scheme of things.

Now I have no experience of this whatsoever of course, but it seems to me that if you made that small adjustment to the post, it actually may reflect the true situation, but with your admittedly more "knowledgeable view" of things farang and particularly con men and perhaps drunks, I will bow to your greater knowledge.

Been done

Learned a lesson

Hope I remember it next time.

Forgot the basic rule of Caveat Emptor

Would happily have him sent down, but why compound the problem with violence. I prefer not to be His Majesty's guest beside him...

As I recall you made a promise to lighten up IT/M? You may have other reasons for your post but do not believe the post you cite is ammo for the words you used.

I refer to

and particularly con men and perhaps drunks
as being out of order unless you know something we don't.

Who are the spruikers in the boiler room scams... Farang....never ever lend a baht to a farang unless you are prepared to lose it forever. His reasons are so much more creative than mothers operation and the sick kwai of bargirl fame.

###### it Pat Pong I was going to ask you if I could borrow a dollar or two. For my gf's sick buffalo monthly payment of course.

Are the gruesome twosome still out there???

One is a guy from Liverpool, and the other from Southampton (though has an Irish accent). I'd heard rumours of these two idiots, and actually bumped into them oneday. I would imagine that the pair of them are in Prison now, and if not then I will be amazed. They stay in Bangkok, and like to stay in hotels, and make off without paying. Hassle as many farang locals and holidaymakers alike for money, and bullying gullible backpackers. This was back in early 2002.

Basically you should deal with idiots like these head on. IGNORE whoever it was that suggests that farang con artists are violent, and that you should just shy away. You gotta meet violence with even more shocking violence. When I bumped into these idiots I threw on into the road infront of a car, luckily for him the car had ABS. That gave him and his buddy a fright, and off they ran down Sukhumvit soi4. :o

If the funds will enable the Kwai to go on to tertiary studies that'll be different. Sickness can be contagious, and thus must be avoided at all costs. . :o

Which impostors Doc.. I will go look

I asked Kwiz to ID them IT.

I am not an Admin to view the details of people here. IT pointed out one group of ID's in another thread. And U too did the same.

Why don't you request it from them?

:D

Anyway, if this is happening, can we call that as a SCAM? or not. What do you think Dr? :o

Not sure if you would include following under label of 'scams'.

I'm sure lots of other long time residents have the regular phone calls & visits from the farang selling financial services, financial products etc. I get at least 2 to 3 calls a month.

The Admin manager in my office has been instructed to throw them out, with speed.

I would suggest all concerned to be very wary of these people. Most of them have no knowledge whatever of what they are trying to sell, who to target (in a sense of advanced marketing knowledge), etc. Most are also quite nieve to think they can make a living from this activity, they quickly fall by the wayside, meaning that we then have the new arrivals on the phones.

My experiences with these people include:

- An older English guy, who desperately needed a bath and a clean shirt, who stole the internal telephone directory whilst the receptionist called my extension, refused to leave, and I had to call the security guard. Then plagued the other farang with endless calls, also tried to bribe someone in HR dept for a list of names and phone nos of the expat wives.

- A young Australian guy who, when asked about taxation implications replied - "this has nothing to do with tax, I don't understand why your asking questions about a different subject".

- The young Swedish lady who walked in - looked like she had just come from an all night beach party, totally inappropriate clothes, rubber thongs on her dirty feet. Ignored the receptionist, noticed me sitting behind a glass wall, opened the door, disrupted a meeting. When I asked her to leave, she replied with 'If you don't want any financial advice, then I'll tell your fortune for 5,000 Baht.

- The young English lad who called, just recently, and asked if was interested to have detailed information about the sudden rise of a certain mutual fund. I said I wasn't interested, he replied with 'why aren't you interested'? Nice executive approach.

- The fax messsage telling me (totally unsolicited) that I had been given an appointment, at an office off Silom road for later that week at a given time, then reminded me not to be late.

This is not a seriously bad scam but Pattaya residents be aware that there is a woman aged about forty, with a painted white face and bright red lips and blood-shot eyes who will tell your fortune (palm reading) for 20 baht. So far so good, But,

At the end of the 'reading' she will give you a Thai lottery two figure number tip, (the lottery is every two weeks). If by chance you have been given the right number by her she will expect some payment when she sees you next as a tip!

She has a photographic memory for faces and she will remember the number she gave you!

Here is how she does it: The chances of picking the two digit lottery number are 100-1 So she picks 5 numbers to give punters every two weeks.

She remembers who have what numbers by dividing punters into five groups:

Thai Bar Girl

Young Falang Man

Falang Woman

Old Falang Man

Bald Old Falang

Each punter gets one of five numbers. Her chances of 1 in 20 every two weeks look good, it's a no-lose bet and a lucky pay-day might net forty-fifty punters at 100-200 baht tip for the lottery 'tip'.

Yes indeedy. These sorts really irritate me with their breathless rushed delivery in order to impart all their blether before being cut off. My technique is to say that Yes, I am interested, ask them to wait a moment then put the phone on my desk. Not only are they left hanging on while paying for the call, but they are also unable to pester any other sort while waiting for me. Just a thought!

Dr Hiram,

I like your tactic, but I think I can top it.

My permanent base is Bangkok, but I travel frequently (Star Alliance gold card holder) all over Asia: HK, S'pore, KL, Jakarta, Bali, Karachi, Shanghai, Ho Chi Mien.

Most of these 'financial services advisors' get my hmobile no. when they buy their namecard lists. When these characters call me, I'm often out of Thailand. Like you I let them run their spiel, or let them wait, then I tell them "Do you realize your paying for a call to Shanghai?

They terminate quickly.
