clarebangkok
Im a girl called clare from england but i want to emigrate to Bangkok by visa runs. If i decide to live in Bangkok, Ill be on my own and I cant speak Thai, so Ill want someone English speaking to show me around and to help me if i get into trouble there. Id especially like to contact other young English speaking people aged from their early teens to their early twenties before I come because Im useless making new friends, and I dont drink or go to bars. Or is there somewhere else I could go to make friends? And I also want to know the cheapest long term accommodation in bangkok that has air conditioning and its own toilet facilities. I dont really need a television or a fridge, And I can make do with a small stove from a camping shop but Ill want a bed in it. And where in Bangkok can i pre-order books and dvds in English? Im worried that might be a problem in Thailand. And I dont know anything about medical insurance, how do I get it, which is the cheapest and should I buy it before I leave the uk if I *do* come?

And who is Old Farang, are you saying im someone called Old Farang or saying im an old non-Thai? I dont mind I just dont get it. Im planning on obtaining a visa with a TEFL course, or a course in Thai language that Ive seen advertised... if I can afford it. And after that its anything not to have to come back to England I think! Im not really a good cook no, and I dont play backgammon (its a board game?) and lol I hope I dont burn my arse! Clare, surely you know that TV is a magnet for trolls who create fake identities just for kicks. This forum is populated mostly by older farang (read caucasian) men. There's simply not too many young farang women choosing to come to Thailand just for the love of country. It doesn't mean that you're not who you say you are. Just very unusual, that's all. Clare, they just assumed you were on a wind up, I suppose it is like some sort of initiation quite a lot of people seem to go through it. I suppose it's because this site does get its fair share of trolls. Anyway, don't worry about cooking, I doubt you'll have to, there's food everywhere. Have you been before? have a look at this site for rooms http://en.9apartment.com/ best thing to do would be to get a hotel for a week or so then go round and have a look. I don't know Bangkok all that well myself, but I've got a couple of friends there. Don't worry too much about the 'initiation' replies you get, just keep looking round the site, there's plenty of information that you can find for yourself by looking and reading. Good luck, Biff

IanForbes
Claire, do you have some special reason to choose Bangkok for your place of residence? If not then I would suggest Chiang Mai where there is a solid base of English speaking expats of all ages. Accommodation is also much cheaper in Chiang Mai. Bangkok is a huge city and it can be confusing for a first time visitor. By contrast you can walk just about everywhere in Chiang Mai and not get lost. When you get your feet under you then that is the time to venture out to other parts of Thailand. There is lots to see everywhere.
