I wonder if anyone out there can help me. I am a 58 year old UK national, and have been living in Chiang Mai for the last three years. I have since married a Thai national, and my wife and I now have two very young children to look after. I came to Thailand three years ago on an O-A visa, which I extended for one year on the basis of retirement. I then changed this to an extension based on marriage. This 'marriage visa' will come up for renewal at the beginning of next year.

The problem is that I have dipped into the 400,000 baht I kept in a deposit account to facilitate my yearly extension of stay. I wasn't too worried about doing this at first, as I understood I could combine my savings and my income (from house rental in the UK) when I came to renew my extension, in the same way that you can with a 'retirement visa'. I now realize that I was given incorrect information, and I am struggling to replace the funds I took out before the deadline for renewal falls.

My first question for the panel of experts out there is: When is the deadline? Is it two months or three months before the date I submit my application for renewal? There seems to be some debate about this. Bear in mind that this will be the second time I have applied for an extension based on marriage.

My second question refers to the possible options I might have if I can't get the cash together in time. I have read on this website that it is possible to fly to Kuala Lumpur, and get a one year multiple-entry visa there, as long as you can prove you are married and have 100,000 in the bank. This wouldn't be a problem. You apparently will have to do a border run every 90 days, but this wouldn't be a problem either. Has anyone done this? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Some offices want the money in the bank for 3 months.

Some will accept 2 months. You will have to ask them.

If you need more time you can apply for a 2 month extension to visit your Wife.

KL will issue a Multi Entry Non Imm O Visa if you have at least 100,000 Baht in the bank.

Thanks for that. Do you know how long it takes to issue the visa in KL? And what do they need in the way of documentation? Same as for renewal? i.e. tabian baan, wife's ID, marriage certificate, kid's passports, letter from bank etc.?

Thanks again to Lite Beer for the information regards KL. The only thing I don't quite get is

"**Upon application time make sure you do not have any valid Thai visa on your passport**".

What does this mean? Does it mean I have to wait until my current visa has expired before I can apply for a new one. i.e.do I have to fly out to KL, say, the day before my permission to stay expires, then wait a day in KL before applying for the new one?

What happens if I dip below 100,000 Baht on my Thai bank savings book for about one week when I paid my annual rent payment? Will that be enough to deny me the Non O marriage visa? Also is it recommended that for the fist time applying for this visa in KL, would I be better to take my wife and 3 year old daughter with me? We live in Phuket so it is not too far to KL.

Do you are anyone out there have any nice and cheap hotel near the embassy in KL to recommend? Also since I may be travelling with my 3 year old daughter, do you know of any fun water parks or theme parks in KL?

There is no time in account requirement for visa issue - only that you show 100k is in account when you apply for the visa. It is not like an immigration extension of stay where the money must be in account several months.

If money is a factor wife/child would not need to travel but expect it might make a nice vacation.
